Waskerley Reservoir
Waskerley Reservoir is the largest of a group of three reservoirs located on Muggleswick Common, County Durham, with the others being Smiddy Shaw and Hisehope Reservoirs. The reservoir, which was constructed in 1877, is owned and operated by Northumbrian Water.Waskerley, Smiddyshaw, Hisehope (pdf downloadable at ) It and Smiddy Shaw—which in turn is fed by Hisehope—feed water under gravity to a water treatment works at Honey Hill.) Because the three reservoirs cannot meet the full demand of Honey Hill, Waskerley can be replenished by a gravity feed from Burnhope Reservoir or, if necessary, by pumping water from the Tyne-Tees Tunnel via an airshaft. Muggleswick
Muggleswick is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles to the west of Consett. the population was 130 at the 2001 Census reducing to 113 at the 2011 Census. Geography A significant area of the south and west of the village is taken up by Muggleswick Common, an area of upland moorland used for grouse rearing (and associated game (food) shooting) and sheep grazing. This area consists predominantly of Calluna, heather with encroaching bracken. Burnhope Reservoir
Burnhope Reservoir ( ) is a reservoir above the village of Wearhead, County Durham, England. The reservoir was created by the construction of an earth embankment dam across the valley of Burnhope Burn, a tributary of the River Wear, above Wearhead. Construction of the dam began in 1931 and was completed in 1937; an extensive network of narrow gauge railways, the Burnhope Reservoir railway, was used during the construction of the dam. Filling of the reservoir commenced in 1936 and resulted in the drowning of the former village of Burnhope. Burnhope Reservoir was a joint project of the Durham County Water Board and the Sunderland and South Shields Water Company. It is now owned and operated by Northumbrian Water. Muggleswick, Stanhope and Edmundbyers Commons and Blanchland Moor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in County Durham and Northumberland, England. It consists of two separate areas, the larger—encompassing the upland areas of Muggleswick, Stanhope and Edmundbyers Commons—in the Derwentside and Wear Valley districts of north Durham, the smaller—Blanchland Moor—in the Tynedale district of south-west Northumberland. The site has one of the most extensive areas of dry Heath (habitat), heath in northern England. There are also areas of wet heath, acid grassland, Poor fen#Ecology, flushes, relict juniper woodland and small areas of open water. Flora and fauna The dry heath is dominated by heather, ''Calluna vulgaris'', and wavy hair-grass, ''Deschampsia flexuosa''; the regionally rare bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, is found on the higher parts of Blanchland Moor. North Pennines
The North Pennines are the northernmost section of the Pennines, a range of hills which run north–south through northern England.
