Warwick County F.C. was the association football division of Warwickshire County Cricket Club. History Following the examples of Notts County and Derby County, both of which were, in origin, county cricket clubs, the Warwickshire CCC decided to start up a football division in 1887, playing at the Edgbaston ground during the winter. However, whereas Notts had a clean slate, and Derbyshire only had works or school sides with which to compete, by 1887 the Birmingham football scene was fully mature, with Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham St George's, and Birmingham City, Small Heath Alliance all being professional clubs with strong fanbases. Consequently, despite the resources of the cricket club, County failed to gain a foothold, with "good gates" being elusive, and the media being "always asserted that the venture was a hopeless one". William Ollis
William Ollis (12 August 1871 – May 1940) was an English professional footballer who played as a right half. Born in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, Ollis played 121 games in the Football Alliance and the Football League for Small Heath. He was part of the team which won the inaugural Second Division championship in 1892–93 and gained promotion to the First Division via the Test Match system the following season. He also played for Warwick County and Hereford Thistle. He died in Birmingham at the age of 68. Frederick Wilkes
Frederick Wilkes (1869 – after 1892) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football Alliance for Small Heath. Wilkes was born in the Handsworth district of Birmingham and began his football career with Handsworth Boys Club. He signed for Small Heath in April 1891, and played in a few friendly matches at the end of that season. With Harry Morris struggling for fitness towards the end of his career, Wilkes was one of six players tried at centre forward during the 1891–92 Football Alliance season. Charles Boyd Hare (16 March 1870 – 10 August 1947) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Aston Villa, Woolwich Arsenal and Small Heath in the 1890s. An inside forward or centre forward, he also represented Watford and Plymouth Argyle in the Southern League. Life and career Born in Ladywood, Birmingham, Hare played in the Football League in the 1890s for Aston Villa, contributing to their first league title in the 1893–94 season. James Cowan (footballer)
James Cowan (17 October 1868 – 12 December 1918) was a Scottish football player and manager, winning five Football League First Division titles and two FA Cup winners medals at Aston Villa and later taking charge of Queens Park Rangers. Playing career Club Born in Jamestown, Dunbartonshire, Cowan was a half-back who played with local sides Renton and Vale of Leven before moving to England in 1888 to play for the Warwickshire County FC. The following season, he wished to pursue a professional career and joined Aston Villa and spent 12 years with the Birmingham side. When Cowan played for the club in the 1890s and early 1900s, they were the giants of the Football League.
