Wami Kata
Wami Kata is a suburb in the Far North region of South Australia, situated within the City of Port Augusta. It was named and its boundaries created in February 1994, named for the Aboriginal community. The name means "head of the snake" in Pitjantjatjara. A section of Wami Kata was severed and included into the new locality of Emeroo in 2013, and a further portion in its south severed, along with a section of neighbouring Port Augusta, to create the new suburb of Davenport in 2014. Following the creation of Davenport in 2014, the Wami Kata Old Folks Home now lies within Davenport. The historic former Emeroo Station Ostrich Farm, which is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register, lies mostly within Wami Kata; a portion also lies on its border with Emeroo. The Trans-Australian Railway runs along its western edge, but has never stopped within its current boundaries, and the Marree railway line is near the eastern boundary. City Of Port Augusta
The City of Port Augusta is a local government area located at the northern end of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. It is centred on the town of Port Augusta. History The Port Augusta region is a natural crossroads and aborigines have been trading in the area for 40 000 years. European settlement began in the 1840s. The town grew from a pastoral service centre to a railway town with the construction of the overland telegraph line. Port Augusta's rail importance grew with the start of the railways towards Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie. The municipality was created as the Corporate Town of Port Augusta on 3 November 1875. Emeroo is the site of a township that never developed. As of 2012, the majority land use in the area was pastoral farming, while the land in the east of the area, which is associated with the western slope of the Flinders Ranges, includes The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park and is zoned for conservation. The gazetted locality of Emeroo was created in April 2013, including portions removed from the adjoining localities of Quorn and Wami Kata; the name was derived from the undeveloped township. Its western and southern boundaries approximately align with those of the cadastral unit of the County of Newcastle. Marree Railway Line
The Marree railway line is located in the Australian state of South Australia. History As a result of the opening up of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the late 1940s and capacity restrictions on the existing narrow gauge Central Australia Railway via the Flinders Ranges, Marree railway station, Marree and Quorn railway station, Quorn, a new standard gauge line was built, opening on 17 May 1956 from Stirling North on the outskirts of Port Augusta railway station, Port Augusta to Telford Cut and on 27 July 1957 to Marree. The line was extended to Marree railway station, Marree because of the volume of cattle traffic coming off the Birdsville Track. Pitjantjatjara Dialect
Pitjantjatjara ( ; or ) is a dialect of the Western Desert language traditionally spoken by the Pitjantjatjara people of Central Australia. It is mutual intelligibility, mutually intelligible with other varieties of the Western Desert language, and is particularly closely related to the Yankunytjatjara dialect. The names for the two groups are based on their respective words for 'come/go.' Pitjantjatjara is a relatively healthy Australian Aboriginal languages, Aboriginal language, with children learning it. Port Augusta West, South Australia
Port Augusta West is a suburb of Port Augusta, South Australia. However, it has a separate early colonial history to Port Augusta, because it is on the Eyre Peninsula, while the rest of Port Augusta is on the east side of Spencer Gulf. It was not until 1926 that a bridge was built across the head of the Spencer Gulf to connect them, replacing a punt. The Corporate Town of Port Augusta West was gazetted on 6 October 1887, and only merged into the Corporate Town of Port Augusta on 28 April 1932. Port Augusta West contains the junction of the Eyre Highway (to Eyre Peninsula and Western Australia), Stuart Highway (to the Far North and Northern Territory), and Augusta Highway (to Adelaide). County Of Frome
The County of Frome is one of the 49 cadastral counties of South Australia in straddling the Mid North and Flinders Ranges regions. The suburb was created on 8 July 2014 on land excluded from the existing suburbs of Port Augusta and Wami Kata. This followed a request from the Davenport Community Council, the organisation representing the aboriginal community residing there. It is located within the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Davenport.
