Walthamstow Granada
Walthamstow Granada (previously known as Mirth, Marvel & Maud Granada/EMD, Granada Cinema, EMD Cinema, MGM Cinema and ABC Cinema) is a Grade II* listed building housing a pub, cinema and cultural centre in Walthamstow, London. The building is famous for having been frequented by Alfred Hitchcock during its time as a cinema. It was built on a site where films were shown as early as 1896. The building reopened as Soho Theatre Walthamstow on 1 May 2025. History In 1930 Granada plc built a 2,697 seat cinema, opened as ''The Granada''. The building featured exteriors by Cecil Masey and interior decorations by Theodore Komisarjevsky. In later years, as a result of changes in the building's ownership, the cinema was variously known as ''MGM'', ''ABC'', and ''EMD cinema''. Walthamstow ( or ) is a town within the London Borough of Waltham Forest in east London. The town borders Chingford to the north, Snaresbrook and South Woodford to the east, Leyton and Leytonstone to the south, and Tottenham to the west. At the 2011 census, Walthamstow had a population of approximately 109,424 and is around north-east of Central London. Antic Collective is a company which runs roughly 50 public house, pubs in London. The original company, which was founded in 2000, went into administration in 2013 over unpaid debts. Some pubs were closed and the remaining operating pubs were sold to a sister company Gregarious. In 2018, the company's staff began a campaign for better wages, especially at Christmas. In November 2020, the company lost around a third of its portfolio which were taken over by Portobello Brewing after their "long term financial partners decided to serve notice upon us to terminate our management relationship for those pubs in which they had an interest".
