Walter Reed (Canadian Politician)
Walter Reed (February 22, 1869 – January 16, 1945) was a construction contractor and political figure in Quebec. He represented L'Assomption in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, t ... from 1908 to 1935 as a Liberal. He was born in Saint-Clément, Quebec, the son of William Reed and Vitaline Langevin, and was educated in Beauharnois. In 1890, he married Léa Champagne. Reed served on the city council for Maisonneuve from 1901 to 1905 and was mayor from 1905 to 1907. He lived in L'Assomption from 1910 to 1935. He was defeated when he ran for reelection to the Quebec assembly in 1935 and 1936. He died in Montreal at the age of 75 and was buried in L'Assomption. L'Assomption (provincial Electoral District)
L'Assomption is a provincial electoral district in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada, that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It includes the city of L'Assomption and part of the city of Repentigny, as well as a few other municipalities. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, '' speaker''. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve () is a neighbourhood in Montreal, Canada, situated in the east end of the island, generally to the south of the city's Olympic Stadium and east of downtown. Historically a poor neighbourhood, it has experienced significant change and gentrification in recent years. L'Assomption () is an off-island suburb of Montreal, in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the L'Assomption River. It is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of L'Assomption. It is located on the outer fringes of the Montreal urban area. Most of the economy depends on the agricultural industries of the surrounding plains. It is also the cultural centre of the region.
