Walter Aircraft Engines
Walter Aircraft Engines is an aircraft engine manufacturer and former automotive manufacturer. Its notable products include the M601 turboprop. The company is based in Prague, Czech Republic. It has been a subsidiary of GE Aerospace since July 2008. History Josef Walter founded the company in 1911 to make motorcycles and motor tricycles. It started to make automobiles in 1913: initially its own models, and later the Fiat 508, 514, 522 and 524 under licence. By 1926 Walter was Czechoslovakia's fourth-largest car maker by sales volume. In 1929 it still held fourth place, and production peaked at 1,498 cars for the year. By 1932 Walter production had slumped to 217 cars for the year. The figure recovered to 474 in 1933, but fell again to 102 in 1936 and to only 13 in 1937. Walter ceased car production in 1954. The Ranger V-770 was an American air-cooled inverted V12 engine, V-12 aircraft engine developed by the Ranger/Fairchild Engines, Ranger Aircraft Engine Division of the Fairchild Aircraft, Fairchild Engine & Aircraft Corporation in the early 1930s. Design and development In 1931, the V-770 design was built, derived from the Ranger L-440, Ranger 6-440 series of inverted inline air-cooled engines, and test flown in the Vought XSO2U-1 Scout. In 1938 it was tested in the Curtiss SO3C Seamew but was found to be unreliable with a tendency to overheat in low-speed flight, but would still be the most produced aircraft to have the V-770, with 795 being built. Argus As 410
The Argus As 410 was a German air-cooled inverted V-12 aircraft engine that was first produced by Argus Motoren in 1938. Design and development The engine marked a departure from earlier Argus engines in that it had new construction techniques which gave the engine greater operating speeds and power. The engine featured smaller 105 mm x 115 mm cylinders with deep finned steel cooling slots, aluminum heads, geared supercharger, a steel alloy crankshaft and a magnesium alloy crankcase. The engine weighed approximately and produced (342 kW) at 3,100 rpm. Approximately 28,700 engines were produced. A distinctive feature is the finned spinner ahead of the propeller. This is driven by the airflow as a windmill, and used to power the actuator of the variable-pitch propeller. The more powerful and refined Argus As 411 was developed from it. RWD 22 was a Polish twin-engine torpedo bomber and naval reconnaissance floatplane design. Developed by Leszek Dulęba and Andrzej Anczutin of Doświadczalne Warsztaty Lotnicze (''Experimental Aeronautical Workshops'', DWL) in 1939, the project was to be developed under the brand of the RWD design bureau. The outbreak of World War II interrupted the design and it never left the planning stage.
