Walter L. Shaw Sr. (December 20, 1916, in Vineland, New Jersey – July 21, 1996) was an American telecommunications engineer and inventor who clashed with his employer (variously identified as AT&T Corporation, AT&T, Bell Telephone Company, Bell and Southern Bell) over ownership of his inventions. As a result, he quit and eventually ended up supplying the Italian-American Mafia, Mafia with black boxes capable of making free and untraceable telephone calls. In 1976, he was convicted of "illegal phone usage" and sent to prison. Biography He was born on December 20, 1916, in Vineland, New Jersey, to Amanda and Edward Shaw. Shaw went to work for AT&T or Bell or Southern Bell in 1935. In his spare time, he invented things, eventually obtaining 39 patents. Vineland is a City (New Jersey), city and the most populous municipality in Cumberland County, New Jersey, Cumberland County, within the U.S. state of New Jersey.
