Walter II (bishop Of Autun)
Walter II ( or ''Gauthier'') was the bishop of Autun from 1189 until 1223. Walter's family background is unknown. He was a member of the regular clergy prior to his election as bishop in 1189. In 1202, he joined the Fourth Crusade in a ceremony alongside some knights from the Auvergne. He did not travel with the main army, but sailed with his company directly to the Holy Land from Marseille, thus avoiding the sack of Constantinople. Count Guigues III of Forez travelled in the same flotilla. Both arrived in Acre in early 1203. The Fifth Crusade (September 1217 - August 29, 1221) was a campaign in a series of Crusades by Western Europeans to reacquire Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land by first conquering Egypt, ruled by the powerful Ayyubid sultanate, led by al-Adil, brother of Saladin. After the failure of the Fourth Crusade, Innocent III again called for a crusade, and began organizing Crusading armies led by Andrew II of Hungary and Leopold VI of Austria, soon to be joined by John of Brienne, titular King of Jerusalem. An initial campaign in late 1217 in Syria was inconclusive, and Andrew departed. The Abbey of St. Symphorian, Autun, () is a former abbey, later a priory, of Benedictine monks located outside the walls of Autun in Burgundy, France. History The abbey was named after Saint Symphorianus of Autun, a 2nd-century martyr, and was founded by Saint Euphronius, bishop of Autun, in the 5th century; its existence is attested in 452. The sack of Constantinople occurred in April 1204 and marked the culmination of the Fourth Crusade. Crusaders sacked and destroyed most of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire.
