Elizabeth Wallwork (née Donaldson, 20 July 1883 – 4 June 1969) was a New Zealand artist. Early life Born Elizabeth Donaldson on 20 July 1883, in Broughton, England, she was the sixth of nine children of Elizabeth Ann Hibbert and John Donaldson. In 1911 she moved to New Zealand with her husband, fellow artist, Richard Wallwork, after he was offered position of life master at the Canterbury College School of Art, Christchurch. Education Wallwork studied at Manchester School of Art (previously Municipal School of Art) and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, receiving two first-class certificates in drawing and in painting in 1907–1908. She was awarded the Lady Whitworth Scholarship. Career Wallwork was known as one of the foremost exponents of pastel portraiture in New Zealand. She also painted in oil and exhibited landscapes. Flying Officer John Wilson Wallwork (1898 – 18 December 1922) was a British World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. Biography Wallwork was born Radcliffe, Lancashire, the son of James and Marian Stuart Wallwork. He was commissioned from cadet to temporary second lieutenant (on probation) on the General List to serve in the Royal Flying Corps on 20 April 1917, and appointed a flying officer and confirmed in his rank on 15 July. Wallwork was posted to No. 40 Squadron RFC to fly the S.E.5a single-seat fighter, and gained his first aerial victory on 6 March 1918. He gained two more on 9 March and another on the 24th. His fifth and final victory, which made him an ace, came on 12 April 1918. He was subsequently awarded the Military Cross, which was gazetted on 23 July 1918. Jim Wallwork
Staff Sergeant James Harley Wallwork DFM (21 October 1919 – 24 January 2013) was a British soldier and a member of the Glider Pilot Regiment who achieved notability as the pilot of the first Horsa glider to land at Pegasus Bridge in the early hours of D-Day, 6 June 1944, during the Second World War. This achievement was described as "the greatest feat of flying of the second world war" by Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory.After landing Wallwork was severely wounded in the head but managed to carry munition boxes up to the troops defending the canal bridge at Benouville (called 'Pegasus Bridge' some days after D-day by Royal Engineer-troops). Although most noted for his part in the Battle of Normandy, Wallwork flew gliders in every major British airborne operation of the Second World War. John Wallwork CBE FRCS FMedSci (born July 1946), is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon and emeritus professor who performed Europe's first successful combined heart-lung transplant in 1984, and in 1986 performed the world's first heart-lung and liver transplant with Sir Roy Calne. Ronald Wallwork (born 26 May 1941) is a retired male race walker from England, who represented his home nation at two Commonwealth Games. Athletics career He represented England and won a gold medal in the 20 miles walk, at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. Four years later he competed in the 20 miles walk again at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland.
