Walking Man (Borofsky Sculpture)
''Walking Man'' is a 1995 sculpture by Jonathan Borofsky, standing tall and weighing . It is located on the Leopoldstraße in Munich, next to the Munich Re business premises. It was presented to the public on 21 September 1995 by then-head of Re, Hans-Jürgen Schinzler, and then-mayor of Munich, Christian Ude. After presenting the 25-meter high ''Man Walking to the Sky'' sculpture at Documenta 9 DOCUMENTA IX was the ninth edition of documenta, a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. It was held between 13 June and 20 September 1992 in Kassel, Germany. The artistic director was Jan Hoet in collaboration with Bart de Baere, Denys ..., Borofsky was one of six artists invited to the competition for Re's new building. The sculpture was initially created in Los Angeles, and took more than a year to complete. It was shipped to Munich in nine pieces. Jonathan Borofsky
Jonathan Borofsky (born December 24, 1942) is an American sculptor and printmaker who lives and works in Ogunquit, Maine. Early life and education Borofsky was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University in 1964, after which he continued his studies at France's Ecole de Fontainebleau and received his Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1966. He lived in Manhattan until a teaching position at the California Institute of the Arts brought him to Los Angeles in 1977. He resided in Venice and Tuna Canyon, Los Angeles from 1977 to 1992, In the 1960s, Borofsky's art sought to interconnect minimalism and pop art. On May 21, 2006, Borofsky received an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon, his alma mater. Leopoldstraße
Leopoldstraße is a street in the Munich districts Maxvorstadt, Schwabing and Milbertshofen. It is a major boulevard, and the main street of the Schwabing district. It is a continuation of Ludwigstraße, the boulevard of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, north of the Siegestor. Architecture After the incorporation of Schwabing in 1891, it was named after Prince Leopold of Bavaria, son of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. Previously the southern part of this road was called Schwabinger Weg (way). From Milbertshofener Straße / Domagkstraße, Leopoldstrasse is named Ingolstädter Straße. Leopoldstraße runs from the Siegestor (Victory Gate) and the Art Academy in the south to the Münchner Freiheit, with the Protestant church 'Erlöserkirche', and then further to the north. Christian Ude
Christian Ude (born 26 October 1947) is a German politician who served as mayor of Munich from 1993 to 2014. He is a member of the German Social Democratic Party. Career Ude was born in Munich. From 1967 to 1969 he worked for the daily newspaper ''Süddeutsche Zeitung''. He studied legal science in Munich 1969-1977. From 1979 to 1990 he worked as a lawyer. He was elected as deputy mayor of Munich on 2 May 1990, two months after he was elected into the city council of Munich. On 12 September 1993, Ude was elected as lord mayor and successor of Georg Kronawitter.
