Walis Nokan
Walis Nokan (born 22 August 1961) is an Taiwanese indigenous peoples, indigenous Pai-Peinox-Atayal people, Tayal writer from M'ihu community in Taiwan. Walis began his writing career under the pen names such as Wu Chun-chieh (吳俊傑), Liu Ao (柳翱), and Walis Yukan. His works focus on the lives of the working class and have gone through various literary stages that reflect his evolving perspectives, shifting from embracing Han Chinese values and being indifferent to his community to beginning to care about the lives of the working class and actively returning to his community and settling down, working on the preservation of indigenous culture. Walis Nokan has received multiple literary awards and significantly contributed to indigenous literature. The White Terror ( zh, t=, poj=Pe̍h-sek Khióng-pò͘, p=Báisè Kǒngbù) was the political repression of Taiwanese civilians and political dissenters under the government ruled by the Kuomintang (KMT). The period of White Terror is generally considered to have begun when martial law was declared in Taiwan on 19 May 1949, which was enabled by the 1948 Temporary Provisions against the Communist Rebellion, and ended on 21 September 1992 with the repeal of Article 100 of the Criminal Code, allowing for the prosecution of "anti-state" activities. The Temporary Provisions had been repealed a year earlier on 22 April 1991. Martial law had been lifted on 15 July 1987. Howard Goldblatt (, born 1939) is a literary translator of numerous works of contemporary Chinese (mainland China & Taiwan) fiction, including '' The Taste of Apples'' by Huang Chunming and ''The Execution of Mayor Yin'' by Chen Ruoxi. Goldblatt also translated works of Chinese novelist and 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Mo Yan, including six of Mo Yan's novels and collections of stories. He was a research professor of Chinese at the University of Notre Dame from 2002 to 2011. Biography Goldblatt encountered Chinese for the first time as a young man, during his tour of duty with the US Navy, sent to military base in Taiwan at the beginning of the 1960s. Taiwanese indigenous peoples, formerly called Taiwanese aborigines, are the indigenous peoples of Taiwan, with the nationally recognized subgroups numbering about 600,303 or 3% of the Geography of Taiwan, island's population.
