Walid Badir
Walid Badir (, ; born 12 March 1974) is an Israeli former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He won four league titles in five seasons with Maccabi Haifa before joining Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2005. He served as their captain, and won a further league title before retiring in 2013. Badir scored 12 goals in 74 games for the Israel national team between 1997 and 2007. Early life Badir was born in Kafr Qasim, Israel to an Arab-Muslim family. Club career Early career Badir was recognized early on as a valuable prospect, and played for the youth clubs Hapoel Kafr Qasim and Hapoel Petah Tikva, and later was given a spot on the second team's Premier League squad. Hapoel (, ) is an Israeli Jewish sports association established in 1926 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. History During the British Mandate of Palestine period Hapoel had a bitter rivalry with Maccabi and organized its own competitions, with the exception of football, the only sport in which all the organizations played each other. At the time, Hapoel took no part in the ''Eretz Israel Olympic Committee'', which was controlled by Maccabi, and instead sought for international ties with similar workers sports organizations of socialist parties. The Israel State Cup (, ''Gvia HaMedina''), is a knockout cup competition in Israeli football, run by the Israel Football Association (IFA). The State Cup was first held in 1928 as the People's Cup. The Israeli Premier League (, Ligat HaAl, ) is a professional association football league in Israel and the highest level of the Israeli football league system. The league is contested by 14 clubs, and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with its second division Liga Leumit.
