Wakool is a town in the western Murray region of New South Wales, Australia. Wakool is in the Murray River Council local government area, south west of the state capital, Sydney and north-west of Melbourne. At the , Wakool had a population of 297. History Wakool Post Office opened on 1 January 1870 and closed in 1874. It reopened in 1926. Closer settlement of the Wakool area commenced in the 1890s and the town grew around a railway station established on the line between Echuca and Balranald. The Golden Rivers Football Netball League (GRFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in north-central Victoria and the western Riverina area of New South Wales. History The league, formed in 1919, was known as the Kerang and District Football Association until 1944. In 1946, the league was re-established as the Kerang and District Football League. In 1998, the league changed its name to the Golden Rivers Football League at the direction of the Victorian Country Football League to better reflect its expansion beyond the immediate Kerang area. The Murray River Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of Murray Shire with Wakool Shire. Murray Downs Homestead
The Murray Downs Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at Moulamein Road, Murray Downs, Murray River Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was built by Seutorius Henry Officer and Charles Officer (between 1866 and 1884); and by Alfred Felton and Charles Campbell (between 1884 and 1891). The property is privately owned and as of 2024 the Homestead is no longer open for public inspection. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 17 November 2000. The Balranald railway line was a Victorian Railways broad gauge line that branched from Barnes on the Deniliquin railway line and ran to Balranald.
