Waikaremoana Waitoki
Waikaremoana Waitoki is a New Zealand clinical psychologist, academic, and former president of the New Zealand Psychological Society from 2020 until 2022. She is an associate professor at the University of Waikato, and focuses her research on indigenous psychology, and Cultural competence in healthcare, cultural competency. Biography Waitoki graduated from the University of Waikato with a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology, becoming a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society's National Standing Committee on Bicultural Issues in 1998. She also has a PhD from the same university, completed in 2012. From 2002 until 2009, Waitoki was a board member of the New Zealand Psychologists Board. Waitoki was one of the driving forces of the National Māori Graduates of Psychology Symposium, an event held in November 2002. Indigenous Psychology
Indigenous psychology is defined by Kim and Berry as "the scientific study of human behavior or mind that is native, that is not transported from other regions, and that is designed for its people." There is a strong emphasis on how one's actions are influenced by the environment surrounding them as well as the aspects that make it up. This would include analyzing the context, in addition to the content that combine to make the domain that one is living in. The context would consist of the family, social, cultural, and ecological pieces and the content would consist of the meaning, values, and beliefs. Ngāti Māhanga
Ngāti Māhanga is a Māori iwi (tribe) that is part of the Waikato confederation of tribes (now called Tainui). The tribe's historical lands extended from Whaingaroa Harbour (Raglan Harbour) to the west bank of the Waikato River in the city of Hamilton, New Zealand. The Waikato land confiscation of 1864 meant that Ngāti Māhanga and their associated hapū were pushed to west of the Waipā River. Māhanga, the ancestor Ngāti Māhanga is named after Māhanga, a Waikato chief and an 11th generation descendant of Hoturoa, the navigator of Tainui waka. Māhanga lived approximately 15 generations ago and was the son of Tūheitia and Te Ataihaea. Current Maori king Tūheitia Paki is a namesake of the ancestor Tūheitia.
