The Somaliland National Party (), sometimes referred to as the Waddani National Party and better known by its shortened Somali form Waddani (stylised in all caps), is a political party in Somaliland. The party was founded by Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) in 2012, ahead of the second municipal elections later that year. On 16 November 2021 Hersi Ali Haji Hassan was elected as the new chairman of the opposition party. Economically the party leans left, defending the establishment of a universal healthcare system, public investment and doubling resources in education. It is progressive on issues regarding minority rights and fundamental freedoms, such as proposing a quorum of 30% of women in parliament. The party also supports greater decentralisation. Mohamed Aw-Ali Abdi
Mohamed Aw-Ali Abdi ( Somali: ''Maxamed Cali Aw Cabdi'') is a Somaliland politician who is the Vice President of Somaliland. A member of the political party Waddani, he contested the 2024 presidential election with presidential nominee Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and won in a political upset. Mohamed ran for vice president as the running mate of presidential challenger Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi in the 2017 election. In November 2016, he led a large delegation of Waddani politicians to Borama for a campaign event. Later that same month, he held a campaign event in Birmingham, United Kingdom. 2012 Somaliland Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held across Somaliland on 28 November 2012. Two of the existing parties, For Justice and Development and the Peace, Unity, and Development Party contested the elections alongside six newly registered political associations. Results Aftermath In accordance with the Constitution of Somaliland, only the top 3 parties in the election are made legal parties and allowed to contest elections for the next 10 years. The KULMIYE and UCID parties retained their party status first gained in 2002 and Waddani became the countries newest party, having come in second in the elections.
