WWMK (106.3 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve the community of Onaway, Michigan. WWMK is imaged as "106.3 Mac FM". The station is owned by Black Diamond Broadcast Holdings, LLC. ABC Entertainment Network news is featured. WWMK's signal covers the northern tip of the lower peninsula and much of the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In May 2013, the station's call sign was changed to WJZJ, and the WYPV calls and talk format moved to 94.5 FM in Mackinaw City, Michigan, which had been home to "The Bear" simulcast. Later that month, the station's call sign was changed to WOEZ. Onaway, Michigan
Onaway () is a city in Presque Isle County, just east of the Cheboygan–Presque Isle county line in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 890 at the 2020 census. Onaway is the Sturgeon Capital of Michigan, and there is a lake sturgeon streamside rearing facility on the nearby Black River, where the fish migrate down to the Cheboygan River and then to Lake Huron. History This farming community received a post office open on October 23, 1882 with civil engineer Thomas E. Shaw as postmaster. This office was named Shaw for him. Arriving in 1886, Merritt Chandler had platted the community under the name of Onaway. Chandler took over as postmaster with it changing its name to Onaway on March 29, 1890. On August 18, 1893, Shaw took back the postmaster position and changed the office's name to Adalaska. Once again, the post office was renamed back to Onaway on November 15, 1897. WSBX (FM)
WSBX (94.5 FM) is a radio station based in Mackinaw City, Michigan. History The station's original call sign was WSSW (for the station's founder, Sonora S. Wray), which was first issued in October 1986. WSSW first signed on at 94.3 on September 6, 1989, with an automated MOR format, but went dark not long after that. The station, while at 94.3, was a Class A station with an ERP of 3,000 watts, which made the station all but unlistenable outside of the Mackinaw City-St. Ignace area, a seasonal, tourist-driven market barely able to sustain the competing radio stations that were already on the air and firmly established. WSSW's management thought that perhaps packing the station with tourist-related information for the local area would help reverse its fortunes. The station did improve, but not enough. Wray sold the station to Robert A. Naismith in February 1992. The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen Carpenter, Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (musician), Richard Carpenter (born 1946).
