WWEB
WWEB (89.9 FM) was a high school radio station broadcasting a variety music format. Licensed to Wallingford, Connecticut, United States, the station served the New Haven area. The station was last owned by Choate Rosemary Hall Foundation. WWEB featured student and faculty programs supplemented with the programming of WWUH from the University of Hartford. History WWEB's initial construction permit was applied for on November 20, 1965, and granted on November 10, 1966. The station was granted the callsign WWEB on February 14, 1967, and its license to cover was granted on April 10, 1968. In the early days, the station was on the third floor north attic of the building called the Science building (now Humanities). They used a Bauer 5-pot slide board. High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power at 834 kilocycles. Wallingford, Connecticut
Wallingford is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, centrally located between New Haven and Hartford, and Boston and New York City. The population was 44,396 at the 2020 census. The community was named after Wallingford, in England. History The Connecticut General Assembly created the town on October 10, 1667. This original plot of land near the Quinnipiac River is now considered Main Street. Starting on May 12, 1670, there were 126 people who lived in temporary housing, and five years later in 1675 there were 40 permanent homes. In 1697 Wallingford was the site of the last witchcraft trial in New England. Winifred Benham was thrice tried for witchcraft and acquitted all three times. Arbitron
Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) is a consumer research company in the United States that collects listener data on radio broadcasting audiences. It was founded as the American Research Bureau by Jim Seiler in 1949 and became national by merging with Los Angeles-based Coffin, Cooper, and Clay in the early 1950s. The company's initial business was the collection of broadcast television ratings. The company changed its name to Arbitron in the mid‑1960s, the namesake of the Arbitron System, a centralized statistical computer with leased lines to viewers' homes to monitor their activity. Deployed in New York City, it gave instant ratings data on what people were watching. A reporting board lit up to indicate which homes were listening to which broadcasts. WWUH
WWUH is a non-commercial radio station licensed to the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut, United States. The station was started on July 15, 1968 and has a Public Alternative Radio format. WWUH operates on 91.3 MHz from a tower site in Avon, Connecticut, but their programming is also rebroadcast on WDJW (89.7 FM) in Somers, Connecticut. In addition, WWUH was the first station in the state of Connecticut to webcast on a regular basis via its website. WWUH has an extensive music library consisting of close to 140,000 LPs and CDs.
