WVBE-FM (100.1 MHz) is an Urban Adult Contemporary formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Lynchburg, Virginia, serving Metro Lynchburg. WVBE-FM is owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc.. and is simulcast on WVBB 97.7 FM in Elliston-Lafayette, Virginia. A simulcast was offered on 610 AM in Roanoke, Virginia until 2016 when it flipped to sports. History WVBE-FM 100.1 began its history in 1948 as WWOD-FM, originally at 940 watts. It had a sister station on 1390, WWOD, now WPLI. WWOD was the second station to go on in Lynchburg after WLVA. WWOD-FM was religious until it became WKZZ on May 12, 1979 and carried a country format until April 1, 1984, when it became a locally programmed CHR format until 1991. WVBB (97.7 FM) is an Urban Adult Contemporary formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Elliston-Lafayette, Virginia, serving the Roanoke/ Blacksburg area. WVBB is owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc. Station swap All Access reported on September 20, 2007 that Todd P. Robinson, Inc.'s WKCJ would be swapped to Radio Greenbrier, Inc. for WRON-FM (now on 103.1), which took place on August 1, 2008. WKCJ applied to move south to Elliston-Lafayette, Virginia (which is between Roanoke and Christiansburg). The swap ensured that when Todd P. Robinson, Inc. moved the 97.7 frequency, WRON-FM would continue to have an FM station serving Greenbrier County, West Virginia. WPLY (610 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, and serving Southwest Virginia and the New River Valley. WPLY simulcasts a sports radio format with WPLI 1390 AM in Lynchburg. Both stations are owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc. Most programming is supplied by Fox Sports Radio. By day, WPLY is powered at 5,000 watts. But at night, when radio waves travel farther, it reduces power to 1,000 watts to protect other stations on 610 AM. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation.
