WTGR (97.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Union City, Ohio, United States; the station is currently owned by Positive Radio Group of Ohio and features programming from CNN Radio. History The station went on the air as WFOW on November 13, 1989, later changing its call letters to WBNN on March 30, 1990, and to the current WTGR on April 23, 1991. WTGR's transmitter is located in Union City just east of the Ohio-Indiana state line with its studios and offices located in a building which formerly housed a carpet business on Martin Street (State Route 571 East) in Greenville. Since the signal upgrade and retargeting of the former WDRK toward Dayton under later call letters WLSN, WBKI, WDJO-FM, WOLT, and, now, WTKD), WTGR remains as Darke County's only locally-originating, commercial radio station. Union City is a village in Darke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,666 at the 2010 census. It is directly across the state line from its twin city of Union City, Indiana. It has a 24/7 police and fire department run by Police and Fire Chief Mark S. Ater Jr. History Union City was platted in 1838 and incorporated on December 6, 1853. Incorporation came during a period of growth occasioned by the opening of a line of the Greenville and Miami Railroad through the town on December 12, 1852. Ed Johnson (born G. Edwin Johnson) was the founder of Agri Communicators, Inc., the parent company of the Agri Broadcast Network (ABN). Career Johnson was the founder, president, and CEO of Agri Communicators Inc., which included the Agri Broadcasting Network ( ABN Radio), Ohio's Country Journal, a monthly farm newspaper, and the television program AgriCountry. Following Johnson's death in 2001, the family sold the ABN to Clear Channel Communications, who moved network operations from Columbus and merged the network and programming into its Lima, Ohio cluster. In early 2007, AdVance Broadcast & Communication Ltd, parent company of the Buckeye Ag Radio Network acquired the ABN, reintroduced Johnson's well-known preference for broadcasting "from the farm," and in early 2009 returned broadcast operations to Columbus. WTKD (106.5 FM, "The Truth") is a radio station licensed to Greenville, Ohio serving most of the Dayton metropolitan area with a rimshot signal. The station is owned by Truth Broadcasting, Inc. The current programming features Christian talk and teaching radio using the Truth Network. The transmitter is in Greenville, Ohio. WTKD is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in the hybrid digital HD format. WDRK (106.5 FM) was a radio station in Greenville, Ohio, United States. It was last owned and operated by Lewel Broadcasting, Inc. The station operated for more than 25 years, much of the last decade in a fight with the Federal Communications Commission over the renewal of its broadcast license. History WDRK began broadcasting April 14, 1962. Originally owned by John D. Kennedy and Lewis Froikin under the name Kennedy Broadcasting, Inc., it was the first radio station in Darke County, broadcasting from studios at the intersection of State Route 49 and US 127. The owners bought FM station WMER in Celina in 1968. The name on the license was changed to Lewel Broadcasting in 1969; by this time, the station was run by general manager Lee Rutherford and program director Ron Rumley, both formerly of WIFE in Indianapolis. Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) is a consumer research company in the United States that collects listener data on radio broadcasting audiences. It was founded as the American Research Bureau by Jim Seiler in 1949 and became national by merging with Los Angeles-based Coffin, Cooper, and Clay in the early 1950s. The company's initial business was the collection of broadcast television ratings.
