WQIO is an FM radio station in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The station plays adult contemporary music as "The New Super Q 93.7". Currently. WQIO is currently owned by BAS Broadcasting of Fremont, Ohio. History WQIO-FM and its former sister station WMVO were founded by Helen E. Zelkowitz in the 1950s and remained locally owned and operated under Mt. Vernon Broadcasting until its sale in 1994. During the 70s & early 80s, the station was known as The New O94, playing Adult Contemporary music with OM/Morning host Ron Staats. In spring of 1986, along with its power increase from 20 to 50 kW, the station changed its call letters to WQIO with a live Adult-leaning CHR format. WMVO (1300 AM) – branded as "Oldies WMVO" – was a commercial oldies radio station licensed to serve Mount Vernon, Ohio. It also operated a translator signal on 100.9 MHz at the same landmark site: "Radio Hill" (at the intersection of Coshocton Avenue and Upper Gilchrist Road). WILB (1060 kHz) is an AM radio station in Canton, Ohio. It is owned by Living Bread Radio and it airs Catholic radio programming to the Canton, Akron and Cleveland areas. All shows are simulcast on co-owned 89.5 WILB-FM in Boardman. WILB is a daytimer station. By day, it broadcasts with 15,000 watts. As 1060 AM is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A station ( KYW Philadelphia), to avoid interference, WILB only broadcasts during daytime hours. Programming is also available on FM translator W233CE at 94.5 FM. While 1060 AM can only broadcast during daylight hours, the FM translator provides 24-hour Catholic radio to the Canton area. Helen Zelkowitz
Helen E. Weiner Zelkowitz (November 7, 1911 – December 16, 2006) was an American broadcaster, the co-founder of two radio stations, and a member of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. Early years Zelkowitz was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. Broadcasting On May 26, 1951, Zelkowitz and her husband, Charles, began WMVO-FM, a radio station in Mount Vernon, Ohio. They complemented that station with the launching of WMVO (AM) in Mount Vernon two years later. In 1972, they expanded their media holdings with the creation of Mount Vernon Cablevision. Zelkowitz was involved with the two stations in a variety of ways, from being president of the business to being sales manager, general manager, and community director.
