WPNE (FM)
WPNE (89.3 MHz) is an FM radio station licensed to Green Bay, Wisconsin. The station is part of Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR), and airs WPR's "NPR News and Classical Network", consisting of classical music and news and talk programming. WPNE-FM also broadcasts regional news and programming from studios in the Instructional Services building at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, along with sister Ideas Network station WHID (88.1). WPNE-FM transmits from facilities shared with WBAY-TV, WIXX, and WPNE-TV in Ledgeview. The station signed on in 1949 as WHKW, originally licensed in Chilton. It was the third FM station in the Wisconsin Educational Radio Network, forerunner of Wisconsin Public Radio. In 1973, WHKW moved to the WPNE-TV transmitter site in Green Bay after that station's launch the year before, and became WPNE-FM; it also supplanted an additional Wisconsin Educational Radio Network transmitter, WHMD-FM 91.5 at Suring, which had signed on in 1965. HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. HD radio generally simulcast, simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by FM broadcasting, FM radio stations in the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines, with a few implementations outside North America. HD Radio transmits the digital signals in unused portions of the same band as the analog AM and FM signals. Lake Winnebago
Lake Winnebago (, , ) is a shallow freshwater lake in the north central United States, located in east central Wisconsin. At , it is the largest lake entirely within the state, covering an area of about by with of shoreline, an average depth of , and a maximum depth of . It has many shallow reefs along the west shore and a drop-off type shoreline on the east. There are several islands along the west shore. The lake has two primary tributaries, the Wolf and Fox Rivers, which combine at Lake Butte des Morts. The Fox River flows east through Oshkosh and into Lake Winnebago at its west central shore, then flows out at the northwest shore, around Doty Island at Neenah- Menasha to Little Lake Butte des Morts. Suring, Wisconsin
Suring is a village in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States, along the 45th parallel. The population was 517 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. History This area lies within the traditional homeland of the Menominee, who lived here for millennia before European arrival. After years of negotiations with the Ho-Chunk and the United States government about how to accommodate the incoming populations of Oneida, Stockbridge-Munsee, and Brothertown peoples following their removal from New York, the Menominee signed the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars and ceded this territory to the United States. Chilton, Wisconsin
Chilton is a city in and county seat of Calumet County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,720 as of 2024. The city is partially within the Town of Chilton. History The first residents of Chilton were African-American former slave Moses Stanton and his Native-American wife, Catherine, who arrived in January 1845. The city formed around his saw mill and a grist mill a few years later. The village was originally called Stantonville. John Marygold bought the place in 1852 and, according to legend, called it "Chilington," referring to Chillington Hall in England. He sent a verbal message to have the name change recorded in Stockbridge, then the county seat.
