WPKV (98.3 FM, "98.3 K-LOVE") is a non-commercial radio station licensed to serve Duquesne, Pennsylvania in the Pittsburgh media market. The station is owned and operated by Educational Media Foundation and is an affiliate of K-LOVE, EMF's contemporary Christian music network. History As WESA-FM WPKV was originally Adult Top 40 WESA-FM, the sister station of WESA, and was licensed to Charleroi, Pennsylvania; first going on the air in 1967 and under the ownership of Laubach Radio Properties. Created out of necessity to serve the Mon-Yough area because its AM sister was only licensed to operate during sunrise to sunset hours, WESA-FM offered some separate programming during the day, but at night, picked up where WESA was forced to leave off. Both stations became a full-time simulcast once new FCC regulations were passed eliminating the rule mandating that combination AM/FM license holders originate separate programming for half of the broadcast day. WKVP (106.9 FM, "K-LOVE") is a non-commercial FM radio station licensed to Camden, New Jersey, serving the Philadelphia media market. The station is owned and operated by Educational Media Foundation and is an affiliate of K-LOVE, EMF's contemporary Christian music network. WKPA (107.9 FM) is a non-commercial radio station broadcasting Contemporary Christian music programming from the K-Love radio network. Licensed to serve Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, the station services the State College area. The station is owned by the Educational Media Foundation (EMF). History On October 17, 1994, WXXZ Port Matilda came on air quickly changing call sign to WIKN. Wink 108 programmed a rock-leaning CHR format. Due to a dispute between the license holder and the management group running the station, it went dark April 1, 1995. The station was sold to Telemedia and became a sister station to 97.1 WQWK and 1390 WRSC. The station then came back on the air in the summer of 1995, again as Wink 108, but with a Hot AC format. K-Love Classics was a Christian classic hits radio network owned by Educational Media Foundation (EMF) and was carried over FM stations, translators, and HD subchannels in the United States. Such stations include WAIW 88.1 in Wheaton, Illinois. The network was one of the formats produced by EMF. Airing Christian music from the 1980s, 1990s, and early in the decade of the 2000s, the K-Love Classics format debuted in June 2018 as an internet-only station but quickly moved to terrestrial radio on FM and HD Radio subchannels after a large response to the new format. The station was last licensed to Keymarket Licenses, LLC and served the area around Charleroi, Pennsylvania, south of Pittsburgh. History Beginnings as WESA For many of its years, this station was known as WESA-AM. The station debuted November 9, 1947, and for much of its existence, operated as a full-service station serving the Mon-Yough valley, which comprises communities along the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. Pierre Paulin was the first manager of WESA, which then operated from studios and offices at Charleroi Recreational Park on Fifth Street in downtown Charleroi, and was owned by the Monongahela Valley Broadcasting Corporation. Duquesne ( ) is a city along the Monongahela River in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 5,254 at the 2020 census. HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. WLKE (93.5 FM) is an American, Christian radio station serving Altoona, Pennsylvania, from Gallitzin, its city of license. WLKE operates at an effective radiated power of 1,250 Watts. The station is owned by Educational Media Foundation. History The groundwork for WHPA actually was laid in the late 1980s, when a construction permit to build a new FM station was issued to William C. Bland, the owner of Bland Radio Group, Inc., which was then the licensee of WNCC in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. The station was assigned the frequency of 94.3, a class A power output of 3,000 watts and the call letters WRHB-FM. However, this station would never sign on the air under Bland's ownership. WNCC was turned over to a bankruptcy receiver (local attorney Mark Gregg) in 1990, forcing its sale to J. Richard Lee (dba Eagle Radio, Inc.) in 1992.
