The Women's Pro Baseball League (WPBL) is a planned professional women's baseball league in the United States, being developed by co-founders Justine Siegal and Kieth Stein. The league is planned to commence play in 2026, with six teams in the northeastern United States competing. History The Women's Pro Baseball League was co-founded in 2024 by former Major League Baseball (MLB) coach Justine Siegal, and owner of the Intercounty Baseball League's Toronto Maple Leafs, Keith Stein. An advocate for gender equality in sports, Siegal previously founded Baseball for All, a 501(c)(3) organization that promotes girls' participation in baseball. The commercial success and stability of the Women's National Basketball Association and National Women's Soccer League inspired Siegal and Stein to create a professional league for women's baseball, and hired Japan national team pitcher Ayami Sato and former Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston as special advisers to help develop it. Women's Philippine Basketball League
The Women's Philippine Basketball League was a semi-professional women's basketball league in the Philippines. It was originally formed in 1998 as the women's counterpart to the Philippine Basketball League. The league went on hiatus from 2000 until it was revived in 2008. The league was revived by Mikee Romero. However, the league quickly folded after that season. The league, at least for the 2008 season, was sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the country's national basketball federation. Ever Bilena team of Dioceldo Sy dominated the league, winning all three seasons. Pickleball, a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is growing rapidly within India. The ''Times Now'' reported in September 2024 that over 50,000 people in India played the game over the previous 18 months and at the time there were over 500 courts throughout the country, with 40 or 50 new courts being added every month. The popularity of pickleball is causing waiting lists for booking courts. Its increasing reach is attracting sponsors and investment. Pickleball was introduced to India in 2006 by Sunil Valavalkar and has spread to several states including Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. Various clubs and centers, such as Pickleball Arena, offer coaching, court booking, and equipment sales to promote the sport. The league played three seasons from the fall of 1978 to the spring of 1981. The league was the first professional women's basketball league in the United States. Formation and 1978–79 season The WPBL was founded by sports entrepreneur Bill Byrne. The league began with a player draft held in Manhattan's Essex House in July 1978, with eight teams participating. While few of the teams had firm commitments on playing locations (or team names, for that matter), the league planned to play a 34-game season with teams in Chicago, Houston, Iowa, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New Jersey, New York City and Washington, D.C.
