WOSO (1030 AM)
WOSO (1030 kHz) was a commercial AM radio station broadcasting an English-language talk radio format. Licensed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, it served the San Juan–Caguas–Guaynabo metropolitan area. The station was owned by Sherman Broadcasting Corporation, with Sherman Wildman as president. It featured local talk and information shows, a weekday tradio program and syndicated programming from CBS News Radio, ESPN Radio and Westwood One. History WOSO was launched on November 21, 1977. WOSO was the only radio station in Puerto Rico that broadcast in English full-time, until the K-LOVE station WCAD was launched in early 2019. (WBMJ is a Christian radio station broadcasting in both English and Spanish.) WJKL (105.7 MHz), branded on-air as K-LOVE, is a non-commercial FM radio station licensed to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The station serves the island of Puerto Rico. The station is currently owned by Educational Media Foundation and carries network programming from K-LOVE, EMF's main Contemporary Christian music network. History WJKL signed on in June 1968 as WKVM-FM. On July 25, 1978, WKVM-FM changed formats to rock as "Alfa Rock", the first FM with the format in Puerto Rico. WOSO (1300 AM), branded on-air as Radio Oso, is a radio station broadcasting a news/talk format. Licensed to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, it serves the Puerto Rico area. The station is currently owned by NotiRadio Broadcasting, LLC. The station is part of the WAPA Radio News Network and features programming from CNN en Español. The station is shared with translator station W265EC 100.9 FM, also in Mayaguez. WOSO was founded in 1950 by Gilbert Mamery as WTIL, and changed owners over the years. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA; Spanish: ''AEE'') is an electric power company owned by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico responsible for electricity generation, power distribution, and power transmission on the island. Rafael Hernández Colón (October 24, 1936 – May 2, 2019) was a Puerto Rican politician who served as the governor of Puerto Rico from 1973 to 1977 and 1985 to 1993 for a total of three terms. An experienced politician, Hernández held the record for having been the youngest Governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to date, having won his first term at the age of 36.
