WKNK (103.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Callaway, Florida, United States, the station serves the Panama City area. The station is currently owned by Aaron S. Lee, through licensee Great American Media, L.L.C. Until 2018, WKNK featured "The Gulf Coast Morning Show with Flip & Streeter". WRBA (95.9 FM, "B95.9") is a radio station licensed to Springfield, Florida. Owned by Great American Media, it broadcasts a classic rock format serving the Panama City market. History The station began broadcast in 1986 as WVBM, which was the area's first and only African-American-owned radio station. At noon on November 14, 1987, after the call sign was changed to WRBA, the station's format shifted to easy listening and oldies under the name "Bay 96 FM". In a News-Herald interview, then-owner Peter Michael Bardach described its format as being "halfway between WGNE (AM) and Sunny 98 (FM)" and that it was targeted toward adults between 25 and 54. WPFM, branded as "K-Love" is a commercial radio station located in Panama City, Florida, licensed to broadcast on 107.9 FM. WPFM is owned and operated by Educational Media Foundation and formerly aired a Rhythmic Top 40 music format branded as "Hot 107.9". History The station signed on September 4, 1964 as WMAI-FM; the station had initially been issued the call sign WDJJ, but changed to WMAI-FM upon launch. At the time, it was affiliated with WBVI-TV, the predecessor of WMBB. It became WPFM on May 15, 1973, playing a beautiful music format until 1978. In 1978, the format was changed to a mix of Top 40 and Adult Contemporary. Panama City is a city in and the county seat of Bay County, Florida, United States. Located along U.S. Highway 98 (US 98), it is the largest city between Tallahassee and Pensacola. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. In order to save time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose. Hurricane Michael was a very powerful and destructive tropical cyclone that became the first Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the contiguous United States since Andrew in 1992. Hank FM is the on-air brand name of several radio stations in the United States and Canada. Stations using the Hank FM brand name typically air a country format, in configurations of classic country, contemporary country, or a less tightly-formatted mix of the two.
