WKBZ (1090 AM) is a news/talk radio station in Muskegon, Michigan owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. History The current WKBZ is the former WMUS. WMUS began operations in 1947 and became the second radio station serving Muskegon, after the original WKBZ (today's WSMZ); it began as a general-interest independent variety station featuring Associated Press newscasts. WSMZ (850 kHz) is an AM radio station in Muskegon, Michigan. It is the oldest radio station in Muskegon. The station is part of the contemporary Christian-formatted Smile FM network. History The station was first authorized on November 3, 1926, under the call sign WKBZ, to Karl L. Ashbacker in Ludington, Michigan. The call sign was randomly assigned from a sequential roster of available call letters. The station initially broadcast on 1170 kHz, moving to 1500 kHz in June 1927. Following the establishment of the Federal Radio Commission (FRC), stations were initially issued a series of temporary authorizations starting on May 3, 1927. In addition, they were informed that if they wanted to continue operating, they needed to file a formal license application by January 15, 1928, as the first step in determining whether they met the new "public interest, convenience, or necessity" standard. WKBZ was a radio station on 1520 kHz in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. It broadcast between 1963 and 2001 and was last owned by WLC Broadcasting. History The construction permit for WKJR, a daytime-only station on 1520, was obtained on September 27, 1962. The permit was owned by William and William Eugene Kuiper, doing business as the Muskegon Heights Broadcasting Company. The station hit the air in February 1963 and increased its daytime power to 10,000 watts in 1971. The station suffered a humorous accident in 1975 when a field mouse crawled into the transmitter site, shorting out a transformer and keeping the station off the air for 45 minutes during its broadcast of a high school basketball game. WMUS (107.9 FM, "107 MUS") is a radio station broadcasting a country music format in Muskegon, Michigan. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. History 107.9 FM signed on originally around 1988 as WKBZ-FM. Magic 108 Acknowledging the need for an urban oriented radio station in west Michigan, in 1993, the station evolved into WMHG ("Magic 108"), playing urban contemporary music. The station at this time was owned by Goodrich Radio. WMHG upgraded its signal to 15,000 watts and would reach as far as Grand Rapids and south towards Kalamazoo County.
