WJML (FM)
WJML (106.3 FM) is a radio station owned by John Yob, through licensee Mitten News LLC. Licensed to Thompsonville, Michigan, the station serves the Traverse City market with a coverage area extending from the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula south to Manistee and Cadillac. History WJML began operations in May 1971 as WKLA-FM and spent much of its programming day simulcasting its AM sister station throughout the 1970s. Around 1980, the station further separated programming from the AM's middle of the road format by moving into adult contemporary, although the station still simulcast the AM during certain dayparts until 2000. Synergy Broadcast Media purchased WKLA-FM in 2012 from Lake Michigan Broadcasting. The deal did not close until June 19, 2013, at a price of $580,000 for WKLA-FM and sister stations WKLA and WKZC. Thompsonville, Michigan
Thompsonville is a village in Benzie County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The village had a population of 451 at the 2020 census, up from 441 at the 2010 census. The village lies immediately north of the Manistee County line, and is divided between Colfax and Weldon townships. Crystal Mountain, one of Michigan's largest ski resorts, is located just west of Thompsonville. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. Origin Thompsonville was established when construction of the lines of two railroads, the Chicago & West Michigan and the Frankfort & South Eastern, crossed here in 1889. WKZC
WKZC (94.9 FM) is a United States radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to Scottville, Michigan, the Federal Communications Commission assigned the call letters of WKZC on June 21, 1982. WKZC (KZ 96) took to the air February 16, 1983, as a 3,000-watt station at 95.9 MHz owned by Kathy Ziehm/West Shore Broadcasting. In 1993, the station was purchased by Chickering Associates, bringing it into current ownership with longtime competitors WKLA (AM), WKLA-AM/WJML (FM), FM, and moved to its current frequency. WKZC and the WKLA stations were sold to Lake Michigan Broadcasting in 1996. WKZC transmits from a 364-foot tower in Mason County's Hamlin Township. In North American broadcasting, a local marketing agreement (LMA), or local management agreement, is a contract in which one corporation, company agrees to operate a radio station, radio or television station owned by another party. In essence, it is a sort of lease or time-buy. Under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, a local marketing agreement must give the company operating the station (the "senior" partner) under the agreement control over the entire facilities of the station, including the finances, personnel and programming of the station. Its original licensee (the "junior" partner) still remains legally responsible for the station and its operations, such as compliance with relevant regulations regarding content. WQON (100.3 FM, "Q 100.3") is a radio station broadcasting an album-oriented rock (AOR) format. Licensed to Grayling, Michigan, the seat of government in Crawford County, it first began broadcasting in 1978. The station brands itself as ''Q-100''. History WQON: The early years WQON arose out of the staff of AM competitor WGRY, which first went on the air in 1970. Wayne Hindmarsh, one of that station's original employees, left WGRY to put his own station on the air. With an intended target date of June 16, 1977, unexpected delays pushed WQON-FM's debut on the air to 12:06 p.m., November 6, 1978. Album-oriented rock (AOR, originally called album-oriented radio) is an FM radio format created in the United States in the late 1960s that focuses on the full repertoire of rock albums and is currently associated with classic rock. US radio stations dedicated to playing album tracks by rock artists from the hard rock and progressive rock genres initially established album-oriented radio. In the mid-1970s, AOR was characterized by a layered, mellifluous sound and sophisticated production with considerable dependence on melodic hooks.
