WJCL-FM (96.5 FM), known as "Kix 96", is a radio station in Savannah, Georgia, featuring country music. WJCL-FM is a 100,000 watt FM station which serves as the secondary Emergency Alert System radio station for the region. Its studios are located on Television Circle in Savannah and utilizes a transmitter located west of the city in unincorporated Chatham County. History The station was founded by J. Curtis Lewis, Jr., who operated the radio station in conjunction with WJCL-TV on the south side of Savannah, adjacent to his car dealership. The call letters are the founder's initials. Lewis, a former mayor of Savannah, sold the TV station in 1999 to Grapevine Communications. The current owner of the radio station is Cumulus Broadcasting. WJCL (channel 22) is a television station in Savannah, Georgia, United States, affiliated with ABC. Owned by Hearst Television, the station maintains a transmitter in unincorporated western Chatham County, near Bloomingdale. Its studios are located in the '' Savannah Morning News'' building on Chatham Parkway in Savannah. The building also houses its former sister station, Hardeeville, South Carolina–licensed Fox affiliate WTGS (channel 28, now owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group), which now operates separately from WJCL. WEAS-FM is a mainstream urban radio station licensed to Springfield, Georgia, but serving the Savannah Area. The station is owned by Cumulus Media. Its studios are located on Television Circle in Savannah and utilizes a transmitter located west of the city in unincorporated Chatham County. WEAS(FM) began operation in 1968 as an easy listening station to counter the country music format of the sister AM station (which had formerly been WJIV, with an R&B format, until 1960, and later as WEAS with the country format); the station's format was freeform progressive rock in the early part of the next decade. By the mid-1970s, the FM station switched to a similar urban format as today, as did the sister AM station, prior to it being sold and changed to a sports information station. WIXV (95.5 FM, "I-95") is a classic rock formatted radio station licensed to Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is owned by Cumulus Broadcasting. History WSGF-FM WIXV began as WSGF-FM. An application for WSGF-FM, and the callsign, was originally applied for on June 8, 1971; however, an earlier application for the station to operate on 102.1 MHz was tendered in 1969. WSGF-FM began broadcasting on April 24, 1972, & would receive its license to broadcast on April 11, 1973. WSGF-FM originally broadcast a middle-of-the-road (MOR) format. The station changed callsigns to WIXV on July 15, 1983. The station started as in 1972 as WSGF ("95SGF"), a Top 40-leaning adult contemporary station. WTYB (103.9 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Bluffton, South Carolina, United States. The station is owned by Cumulus Broadcasting. It broadcasts an Urban AC music format targeted to Savannah, Georgia.
