The station is owned by Indiana University Student Broadcasting with the slogan 'Pure Student Radio'. Low-power broadcasting, low power FM Operation WIUX is operated by student volunteers currently enrolled in the university. The station has no paid employees or faculty supervisors. The station broadcasts its main programming on 99.1 FM and also maintains an online stream, called "B-Side", which is online only. WIUX is overseen by a student board of directors, which facilitates the station's committees and programs. The election of the board for the next school year is held each spring. A radio format or programming format (not to be confused with broadcast programming) describes the overall content broadcast on a radio station. The radio format emerged mainly in the United States in the 1950s, at a time when Radio broadcasting, radio was compelled to develop new and exclusive ways to programming by competition with Television broadcasting, television. Variety is a radio format that plays music across numerous genres. Free-form radio, Free-form variety is associated with a wide range of programming including talk, sports, and music from a wide spectrum. This format is usually found on smaller, Non-commercial activity, non-commercial public broadcasting stations such as Campus radio, college radio, community radio or high school radio stations. If a variety-formatted station has a program director, that person exerts little if any influence on the music or other programming choices beyond the normal regulatory control required by that country's licensing regulations.
