WIPR-TV
WIPR-TV (channel 6) is a non-commercial educational public television station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, owned by the '' Corporación de Puerto Rico para la Difusión Pública'' (English: Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation). Most of the channel's content is local programming. WIPR-TV's studios are located on Hostos Avenue in Hato Rey. Its transmitter is located at Cerro La Santa in Cayey near the Bosque Estatal de Carite mountain reserve. Much of WIPR's programming is in Spanish, as with most Puerto Rico television stations. The station is branded as ''WIPR Television''. Previously, the station was branded as , , and . WIPR-TV also operates a semi-satellite on the island's west coast, WIPM-TV (channel 3) in Mayagüez. WIPR (AM)
WIPR (940 kHz), branded on-air as “Deportes 940 AM”, is a public, non-commercial AM radio station broadcasting a sports radio format. Licensed to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the station is owned by the Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting Corporation. WIPR is the flagship station of the Camarero Radio Network, dedicated to horse racing. WIPR's audio signal had been simulcast on WIPR-TV channel 6.6 in San Juan & WIPM-TV channel 3.6 in Mayaguez, but was removed on March 20, 2017. On November 18, 2020, WIPR was granted a construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to move to a new transmitter site and to decrease power to 3,000 watts day and 1,900 watts night but is still broadcasting at 10,000 watts fulltime. WMTJ
WMTJ (channel 40), branded on-air as Sistema TV, is a PBS member television station serving San Juan, Puerto Rico that is licensed to Fajardo. The station is owned by Ana G. Méndez University. WMTJ's studios are located in San Juan, and its transmitter is located in the El Yunque National Forest. WMTJ has one full-service satellite: WQTO, virtual channel 26 (digital channel 19), in Ponce. WMTJ's digital signal was not on the air until a few months before the transition deadline. Installation of a digital transmitter for WMTJ had been difficult as the transmitter site is located in a remote tropical forest on national park land, requiring USDA Forest Service approvals of any new transmission tower. Owned by TelevisaUnivision, the station maintains studios on Calle Carazo in Guaynabo. The Short-term Analog Flash and Emergency Readiness Act, or SAFER Act, (, ) is a U.S. law that required the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow the continuation of full-power analog TV transmissions in 2009 for an additional 30 days for the purpose of broadcasting public service announcements regarding the DTV transition in the United States and emergency information. It is also commonly known as the "DTV nightlight bill" or "analog nightlight", referring to a small nightlight that is left on after all of the other lights are out. Digital Television Transition In The United States
The digital television transition in the United States was the switchover from Analog TV, analog to exclusively Digital television, digital broadcasting of terrestrial television programming. It was originally set for December 31, 2006, but was delayed several times due to multiple government acts being enforced on broadcasting companies. Full-power analog broadcasting ceased in most of the country on June 12, 2009, however various aspects of analog television were continued up until 2022.
