WHDZ
WHDZ (101.5 FM) is a community radio station broadcasting a variety format. Licensed to Buxton, North Carolina, United States, the station is currently owned by Radio Hatteras, Inc. History The Federal Communications Commission issued a construction permit for the station on April 1, 2005. The station was assigned the WHDZ call sign on April 13, 2005, and received its license to cover on May 5, 2008. The station was used for emergency news and weather information including Emergency Alert System alerts, rebroadcasting from NOAA Weather Radio station KIG99. In late 2013, the licenses of WHDZ (and translator station WHDX, which also broadcasts from Buxton) were transferred to non-profit organization Radio Hatteras, Inc. WHDZ and WHDX changed formats in early 2014, and now broadcasts a variety format, relying on volunteer announcers and disc jockeys to produce Hatteras Island related programming. Buxton, North Carolina
Buxton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) on Hatteras Island (part of the Outer Banks) near Cape Hatteras. It is located in Dare County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 1,181. Located at the widest part of Hatteras Island, it is the largest community on Hatteras Island both in terms of area and population, and is home to the island's schools and other major public buildings and offices. North Carolina Highway 12 links the community to other Outer Banks communities such as Avon, Frisco, and Hatteras. Buxton is most famous for being the location of Cape Hatteras Light and of the accompanied beaches; it is also the home of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club. Waves is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It is on Hatteras Island, part of North Carolina's Outer Banks. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 134. Waves, along with Rodanthe and Salvo, are part of the settlement of Chicamacomico. The residents of Waves are governed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Waves is part of District 4, along with Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, Rodanthe and Salvo. Hatteras Island (historically Croatoan Island, sometimes referred to as Hatorask) is a barrier island located off the North Carolina coast. Dividing the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound, it runs parallel to the coast, forming a bend at Cape Hatteras. It is part of North Carolina's Outer Banks and includes the communities of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram.
