WGHR (106.3 MHz) is an FM radio station broadcasting Westwood One's Good Time Oldies format. Licensed to Spring Hill, Florida, United States, it serves the northern Tampa Bay area, including Hernando and Citrus Counties. The station is currently owned by WGUL-FM, Inc. (named after the station's former call sign; see WGUL). History The station went on the air on 97.1 MHz as WEOA on October 31, 1989. On January 5, 1990, the station changed its call sign to WPDS; on August 14, 1992, it changed to WXOF. As WXOF, then a country music-formatted station, the station would swap frequencies in 1998 with Holiday-based WLVU-FM 106.3 (now WSUN), in order for the latter station to get a stronger signal in the Tampa Bay area. Spring Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hernando County, Florida, United States. The population was 113,568 at the 2020 census, up from 98,621 at the 2010 census. Spring Hill belongs to Florida's Nature Coast region and is in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area. It is east of Hernando Beach, southwest of Brooksville, and north of Tampa. Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay is a large natural harbor and shallow estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the west-central coast of Florida, comprising Hillsborough Bay, McKay Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay. The largest freshwater inflow into the bay is the Hillsborough River, which flows into Hillsborough Bay in downtown Tampa. Many other smaller rivers and streams also flow into Tampa Bay, resulting in a large watershed area. The shores of Tampa Bay were home to the Weeden Island Culture and then the Safety Harbor culture for thousands of years. First created by recording executive Al Ham in 1978, the format achieved popularity in the 1980s among AM radio stations in the United States and Canada, which were then facing declines in listenership in a transition period of most popular music to the FM band. WSUN (97.1 FM) is a commercial radio station, licensed to Holiday, Florida, and serving the Tampa Bay Area. The station is owned by Spanish Broadcasting System, and airs a Spanish contemporary hits format branded as "El Nuevo Zol 97.1". The transmitter site is off Dartmouth Drive in Holiday. History The station signed on September 1, 1978, on the 106.3 FM frequency as WHBS, a station that served primarily Pasco and northern Pinellas Counties. The station later became WVTY, then WLVU, carrying an easy listening format and later adult contemporary. In 1998, the station would relocate to 97.1 FM (swapping frequencies with Citrus County's WXOF), to better reach the Tampa Bay market. Holiday is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pasco County, Florida, Pasco County, Florida, United States. It is a suburb of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24,939 as of the 2020 census. In the early 1960s, William W. Boyd, president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Tarpon Springs, noted the name Holiday Drive on a map near the site of the proposed branch to be built in southwestern Pasco County and asked his board of directors to give the name to the new branch. The station is owned by Salem Communications and features only syndicated conservative weekday programming from Salem Radio Network. 860 kHz is a Canadian clear-channel frequency. History WGUL previously ran a live, locally based " Music of Your Life" format from 1985 to August 12, 2005. That year, Salem Communications acquired WGUL from its previous owners, WGUL-FM, Inc., in which they changed its format to its current conservative talk format.
