Wave Field Synthesis
Wave field synthesis (WFS) is a spatial audio rendering technique, characterized by creation of virtual acoustic environments. It produces ''artificial'' wavefronts synthesized by a large number of individually driven loudspeakers from elementary waves. Such wavefronts seem to originate from a virtual starting point, the virtual sound source. Contrary to traditional phantom sound sources, the localization of WFS established virtual sound sources does not depend on the listener's position. Like a genuine sound source the virtual source remains at fixed starting point. Physical fundamentals WFS is based on the Huygens–Fresnel principle, which states that any wavefront can be regarded as a superposition of spherical elementary waves. Therefore, any wavefront can be synthesized from such elementary waves. In practice, a computer controls a large array of individual loudspeakers and actuates each one exactly by the time and level at which the desired virtual wavefront would pas ...

Web Feature Service
In computing, the Open Geospatial Consortium Web Feature Service (WFS) Interface Standard provides an interface allowing requests for geographical features across the web using platform-independent calls. One can think of geographical features as the "source code" behind a map, whereas the WMS interface or online tiled mapping portals like Google Maps return only an image, which end-users cannot edit or spatially analyze. The XML-based Geography Markup Language (GML) furnishes the default payload-encoding for transporting geographic features, but other formats like shapefiles can also serve for transport. In early 2006 the OGC members approved the OpenGIS GML Simple Features Profile. This profile is designed both to increase interoperability between WFS servers and to improve the ease of implementation of the WFS standard. The OGC membership defined and maintains the WFS specification. Numerous commercial and open-source implementations of the WFS interface standard exist, i ...

Well-founded Semantics
In computer science, the well-founded semantics is a three-valued semantics for logic programming, which gives a precise meaning to general logic programs. History The well-founded semantics was defined by Van Gelder, et al. in 1988. The Prolog system XSB implements the well-founded semantics since 1997. Three-valued logic The well-founded semantics assigns a unique model to every general logic program. However, instead of only assigning propositions ''true'' or ''false'', it adds a third value ''unknown'' for representing ignorance. A simple example is the logic program that encodes two propositions a and b, and in which a must be true whenever b is not and vice versa: a :- not(b). b :- not(a). neither a nor b are true or false, but both have the truth value unknown. In the two-valued stable model semantics, there are two stable models, one in which a is true and b is false, and one in which b is true and a is false. Stratified logic programs have a 2-valued well-found ...

Women For Sobriety
Women for Sobriety (WFS) is a non-profit secular addiction recovery group for women with addiction problems. WFS was created by sociologist Jean Kirkpatrick in 1976 as an alternative to twelve-step addiction recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). As of 1998, there were more than 200 WFS groups worldwide. Only women are allowed to attend the organization's meetings as the groups focus specifically on women's issues. WFS is not a radical feminist, anti-male, or anti-AA organization. History Jean Kirkpatrick attended AA meetings for three years and was unable to maintain sobriety. The methods of what is now the "New Life" program of Women for Sobriety empowered Kirkpatrick to quit drinking. Discovered through trial and error, the New Life methods are based largely on the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson (particularly his essay, "Self-Reliance") and the Unity Movement of New Thought in addition to Kirkpatrick's personal experience, knowledge of sociology, and experience in ...
