WEDC
WEDC was an AM radio station that operated on 1240 kHz in the Chicago market. It shared this frequency with WCRW and WSBC. The three stations operated as "shared-time stations" for most of their existence, a not uncommon arrangement in the early days of radio, but very rare in later years. They were also foreign language stations, catering to "niche markets". WEDC and WCRW are now off the air, with WSBC remaining. The format of WEDC had mostly been foreign language programming, mainly Polish and Spanish. WSBC (1240 Hertz, kHz) is a commercial radio, commercial AM broadcasting, AM radio station in Chicago, Illinois. It broadcasts brokered programming, mostly ethnic and religious. It is owned by Heartland Signal LLC. WSBC transmits with 1,000 watts. Its transmitter site is on North Milwaukee Avenue at West Catalpa Avenue in Chicago. It shares its radio masts and towers, tower with sister station WCPT (AM), WCPT (820 AM). WSBC features programming aimed at ethnic communities including Russian, Ukraine, Ukrainian, Latin America, Latino, Italy, Italian, Latvian and Ireland, Irish. WCRW (defunct)
WCRW was a Chicago, Illinois AM radio station, which operated on a "shared time" basis until 1996 with two other stations, WEDC and WSBC, each broadcasting a part of the day. History WCRW was first licensed on July 30, 1926 to Clinton R. White, a radio engineer, at 650 Waveland Avenue in Chicago's north side. The station was started during a period when the government had temporarily lost the authority to assign transmitting frequencies, and at the end of 1926, WCRW was reported to be operating on a self-assigned frequency of 720 kHz, located at 817 Grace Street. White and his wife, Josephine, worked at their station as a team, sharing the on-air duties. Josephine claimed to be the first female disc jockey. While the Whites entertained friends and neighbors with their radio station, this programming was not able to pay the station's operating expenses. General Order 32
The Federal Radio Commission's (FRC) General Order 32, dated May 25, 1928, notified 164 of the over 600 existing U.S. radio stations that their applications for continued operation would be denied unless they showed that they met the FRC's "public interest, convenience, or necessity" standard. The result was the elimination of more than 60 stations, plus numerous power reductions, that somewhat reduced the congestion of the broadcast band, in preparation for implementation of the General Order 40 reallocation later that year. Background Radio transmissions in the United States were originally regulated by the Department of Commerce, as authorized by the Radio Act of 1912. The first formal regulations governing broadcasts intended for the general public were adopted effective December 1, 1921. The Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, also known as Group W, was the broadcasting division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. It owned several radio and television stations across the United States and distributed television shows for syndication. Westinghouse Broadcasting was formed in the 1920s as Westinghouse Radio Stations, Inc. After expanding into television, it was renamed Westinghouse Broadcasting Company in 1954, and adopted the ''Group W'' moniker on May 20, 1963. It was a self-contained entity within the Westinghouse corporate structure; while the parent company was headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Westinghouse Broadcasting maintained headquarters in New York City.
