WDSE-FM (103.3 MHz) is a 95,000-watt public radio station in Duluth, Minnesota, operated by the Duluth–Superior Area Educational Television Corporation, which primarily carries an adult alternative radio format but also has a number of programs focusing on jazz, blues, and other genres. It is part of Minnesota's Independent Public Radio network. Programming from national sources includes '' World Cafe'' and ''American Routes''. History The station was founded by students at the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1957 as KUMD, a 10-watt AM station in the basement of what was then Washburn Hall dormitory on the old main campus in a residential neighborhood of Duluth. WDSE (channel 8), branded PBS North, is a PBS member television station in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Owned by the Duluth–Superior Area Educational Television Corporation, it is sister to adult album alternative radio station WDSE-FM (103.3). The two outlets share studios on rented space at the University of Minnesota Duluth; the television station's transmitter is located west of downtown Duluth in Hilltop Park. WRPT (channel 31) in Hibbing, Minnesota, operates as a full-time satellite of WDSE; this station's transmitter is located at Maple Hill Park south of Hibbing. Bruce Elving
Bruce F. Elving (April 19, 1935 – July 24, 2011) was a publisher, FM-radio enthusiast, DXer, and college professor from Duluth, Minnesota. He held a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, a master's degree from Iowa State University, and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. His interest in FM radio began while the technology was still in its infancy and AM was more popular. He was the author of the ''FM Atlas'', a directory of FM radio stations and translators throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. ''FM Atlas'' has been published approximately every 18 months from 1971 to its 21st edition in 2010.
