WCTM
WCTM were the call letters assigned to an FM radio station, and later an AM station, both licensed to Eaton, Preble County, Ohio, United States. WCTM-FM WCTM (92.9 FM) was originally a station built by Stan Coning and three partners organized as Western Ohio Broadcasting Service, in 1959. The station's call letters came from the partners in the venture: Ralph Waring, Stan Coning, Howard Toney, and T. Somers Markle. The first tower for the FM station was purchased from 700 WLW, and was tall. The tower was originally three separate AM tower/antennas, which had been used to keep the 500 kilowatt signal of WLW, allowed only during the 1930s and 1940s, out of Canada. WGTZ (92.9 MHz) is a commercial FM radio station licensed to Eaton, Ohio and serving the Dayton and Springfield radio market. It airs an adult hits format, using the national Jack FM music service and is branded as "92-9 Jack FM." The station operates without DJs. WEDI (1130 kHz "Real Roots Radio") is a daytime-only commercial AM radio station, licensed to Eaton, Ohio. History WEDI began in 1981 as WCTM, a continuation of a beautiful music format which aired originally at 92.9 FM (the present-day WGTZ) where the WCTM calls originated in 1959. In June 2004, while battling with health problems and age, Stanley Coning, the owner, operator, chief engineer and announcer of "Radio Ranch 1130 WCTM", announced his official retirement from radio broadcasting and bid farewell to his many listeners. Stanley Coning died on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2010, at his Eaton residence and is buried with his wife Helen in neighboring West Alexandria. The transmitter site and three towers (home built by Coning himself) remain located in the Preble County rural community of Glenwood, just east of Eaton. Eaton is a city in and the county seat of Preble County, Ohio, United States, approximately west of Dayton. The population was 8,375 at the 2020 census, down 0.4% from the population of 8,407 at the 2010 census. History Eaton was founded and platted in 1806 by William Bruce. The village derives its name from Gen. William Eaton (1764–1811), the U.S. Consul at Tunis, who led a diverse army in a harrowing march from Egypt to Tripoli to meet the U.S. Naval forces. Ed Johnson (born G. Edwin Johnson) was the founder of Agri Communicators, Inc., the parent company of the Agri Broadcast Network (ABN). Career Johnson was the founder, president, and CEO of Agri Communicators Inc., which included the Agri Broadcasting Network ( ABN Radio), Ohio's Country Journal, a monthly farm newspaper, and the television program AgriCountry. Following Johnson's death in 2001, the family sold the ABN to Clear Channel Communications, who moved network operations from Columbus and merged the network and programming into its Lima, Ohio cluster.
