On July 3, 2020, WNGZ changed its callsign to WPHD and flipped to classic hits as part of a five-station frequency swap. Montour Falls, New York
Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,714 at the time of the 2020 census. A waterfall at the end of West Main Street gives the village its name. The name "Montour" is derived from Queen Catharine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca Indian heritage who lived at the village site in the 18th century. The boundaries defining the Village of Montour Falls occur mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part lies within the Town of Dix. The village is located approximately twenty miles north of Elmira, New York and three miles south of Watkins Glen, New York. The New York State Academy of Fire Science is located in the village. WPHD (98.7 MHz, "Cool Radio") is an FM radio station licensed to serve Corning, New York, United States. The station is owned by Kristin Cantrell's Seven Mountains Media, through licensee Southern Belle, LLC. It broadcasts a classic hits music format to the Elmira, New York, metropolitan area. History This station received its original construction permit from the Federal Communications Commission on July 2, 1987. The new station was assigned the call letters WCBA-FM by the FCC on December 3, 1987. WCBA-FM received its license to cover from the FCC on March 23, 1990. In April 1990, licensee Dean J. Slack reached an agreement to sell this station to Eolin Broadcasting, Inc. The deal was approved by the FCC on May 21, 1990, and the transaction was consummated on June 8, 1990. Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. WNGZ (1490 kHz) is an AM radio station licensed to serve Watkins Glen, New York. The station is owned by Seven Mountains Media. The station, which has historically been prone to numerous format changes in the past decade, previously carried a classic country format. FM translators The following FM translators simulcast WNGZ and are used in the station branding. It also provides high fidelity stereophonic sound for the format. History The station originally signed on in 1968 as WGMF, a daytime-only station on 1500 kHz (the same frequency as clear channel WTOP in Washington). The station later moved to 1490 kHz to broadcast 24 hours a day. In 2004, the station aired an adult standards format as WTYX. The Family Life Network is a Christian radio network simulcasting via FM stations across Western and Central New York, as well as northern Pennsylvania from flagship station WCIK. It is owned and operated by the larger Family Life Ministries of Bath, New York. Founded in 1957, FLM is an accredited member of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).
