WBSL-FM (91.7 FM) is a high school radio station broadcasting a variety music format. Licensed to Sheffield, Massachusetts, United States. The station is owned by The Berkshire School, Inc. WBSL, founded in 1973 by Berkshire School faculty member Tom Dixon, is on the air weekdays from 7 to 8:00 a.m. and weekday and Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 11:00 when school is in session. During those times when students and faculty are not on the air, WBSL transmits the signal of National Public Radio affiliate WHDD-FM in nearby Sharon, Connecticut, giving WBSL 24-hour airtime. High School Radio
High school radio are radio stations located at high schools and usually operated by its students with faculty supervision. The oldest extant high school AM radio station is AM 1450 KBPS in Portland, Oregon. Portland radio station KBPS, first licensed in 1923, is the second oldest radio station overall in the city of Portland. The student body of Benson Polytechnic High School purchased the transmitter and other equipment from Stubbs Electric in Portland for $1,800. Money for the purchase of the station came from student body funds. On March 23, 1923, the student body of Benson was licensed by the federal government to operate a radio station using 200 watts of power on 834 kilocycles. The first call letters of the station were KFIF. Sheffield is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,327 at the 2020 census. Sheffield is home to Berkshire School, a private preparatory school. The former resort town includes the village of Ashley Falls, and is bordered by various other towns and villages, such as Egremont and Great Barrington. Variety is a radio format that plays music across numerous genres. Free-form radio, Free-form variety is associated with a wide range of programming including talk, sports, and music from a wide spectrum. This format is usually found on smaller, Non-commercial activity, non-commercial public broadcasting stations such as Campus radio, college radio, community radio or high school radio stations. If a variety-formatted station has a program director, that person exerts little if any influence on the music or other programming choices beyond the normal regulatory control required by that country's licensing regulations.
