WBIG (1470 AM) was a radio station in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States, which broadcast from 1926 to 1986. It was last owned by the Jefferson-Pilot Communications Corporation (JP) and was its first broadcasting property. The company shut it down because of an insufficient signal to cover a growing radio market, competition from FM stations, and the rising value of the land it occupied. History Early years Wayne M. Nelson built the station as WNRC, and it began broadcasting on August 19, 1926; studios were at the O. Henry Hotel in Greensboro. However, while the station had been established in Greensboro in 1926, it had in actuality moved from Charlotte, where it had been established as WJBG on October 1, 1925. W. It started as an independent trade from 1973 to 2006 until VNU Media took over in 2006 and became a relaunched sister trade to '' Billboard'', until its final issue in 2009. Stuart Epperson
Stuart W. Epperson is co-founder and chairman of Salem Media Group, and a member and the president (as of 2016) of the conservative Council for National Policy ("CNP"). In 1984 and 1986, Epperson was the Republican nominee for the fifth Congressional district of North Carolina. In both races, Epperson was defeated by the incumbent Democrat, Stephen L. Neal. Epperson attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he received a bachelor's degree in radio/television broadcasting and a master's degree in communications. Epperson co-founded Salem Communications in 1972 with his brother-in-law, Edward G. Atsinger III, and oversaw its major expansion in hundreds of radio markets nationwide. WBIG (1280 kHz; "The Big One") is an AM radio station broadcasting a mixed-format of talk, home shopping, and sports. Licensed to Aurora, Illinois, it serves the Fox Valley. The station is currently owned by Auril Broadcasting LLC. History The station signed on December 13, 1938 as WMRO, a 500-watt daytimer owned by Martin O'Brien and operating at 1250 kHz; the North American Regional Broadcasting Agreement moved the station to 1280 in 1941. The station's programming was predominantly local, with a full service format being in place in the late 1940s. Among WMRO's on-air staff during this time was a young John Drury. Vincent Cofey and Benjamin Oswalt purchased the station in 1957; three years later, the station was granted night authorization and implemented its current power levels. Aurora is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area located partially in DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will counties in the U.S. state of Illinois.
