WATZ-FM
WATZ-FM (99.3 FM, "99.3 WATZ") is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. The station is licensed to the city of Alpena. WATZ has been assigned the same call sign since it signed on in the late 1960s. The station, along with sister station WZTK, is currently owned by Midwestern Broadcasting Company. From 2006 to 2020, the station simulcasted on Rogers City-based station WRGZ at 96.7 FM. WATZ history WATZ signed-on the air in 1967, as an adult contemporary station at 93.5 FM, known for several years as "Z93." In 1988, the format of WATZ-FM was changed to country and the frequency-signal moved to 99.3 so that the station could boost its power from 3,000 to 50,000 watts. Alpena ( ') is the only city and the county seat of Alpena County, Michigan, United States. The population was 10,197 at the 2020 census, making it the third most populated city in the Northern Michigan region, after Traverse City and Cadillac. On January 2, 2023, the station became "105.7 The Bird... Good Time Oldies". History WZTK was issued its broadcast license by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on July 30, 2014. WTCM (580 kHz) is an AM radio station broadcasting in Traverse City, Michigan with a News/Talk radio format. It is owned by the Biederman family and their company, Midwestern Broadcasting. WTCM's studios on East Front Street in Downtown Traverse City. WTCM is powered at 50,000 watts during the day, the maximum allowed for AM stations. To protect other stations on 580 AM from interference, it must lower power at night to 1,100 watts. The station also uses a directional antenna with a four-tower array. The signal covers much of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula during the day. The transmitter is on Secor Road in Long Lake Township, near Long Lake. WTCM-FM 103.5 is a radio station in Traverse City, Michigan. The station carries a country music format and is owned by Midwestern Broadcasting. History In 1939, WTCM founder Les Biederman (radio executive), Les Biederman and several of his friends - engineer Bill Kiker and Drew McClay among others - decided to start a radio station in an undeveloped radio market. They chose Traverse City, Michigan, Traverse City, Michigan as a city destined for growth which had no local radio station.
