WAHU-CD
WVIR-CD (channel 35) is a low-power, Class A television station in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It is a translator of dual NBC/ CW+ affiliate WVIR-TV (channel 29) which is owned by Gray Media. WVIR-CD's transmitter is located on Carters Mountain south of Charlottesville; its parent station maintains studios on East Market Street ( US 250 Business) in downtown. History The station began its life as charter Pax TV affiliate WADA-LP on August 31, 1998. It first aired an analog signal on UHF channel 55 and later moved to UHF channel 27. In late-March 2005, owner Tiger Eye Broadcasting sold the station to Gray Television who proceeded to change the call letters to WAHU-CA. The station became a Fox affiliate and was integrated with CBS affiliate WCAV (channel 19) and ABC affiliate WVAW-LP (channel 16). Owned by Gray Media, the station has studios on East Market Street ( US 250 Business) in downtown Charlottesville, and its primary transmitter is located on Carters Mountain south of the city. WVIR-TV began broadcasting as the first television station in Charlottesville on March 11, 1973. Despite numerous attempts as early as 1952, it took Charlottesville considerable time to develop a local TV station in part because half the city sits in the United States National Radio Quiet Zone, which constricted acceptable broadcast facilities in the region. WTTG (channel 5) is a television station in Washington, D.C., serving as the market's Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox network outlet. It is owned and operated by the network's Fox Television Stations division alongside MyNetworkTV station WDCA (channel 20). WTTG and WDCA share studios on Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, Maryland. It is owned by Lockwood Broadcast Group alongside dual CBS/Fox affiliate WCAV (channel 19). The two stations share studios on Rio East Court in Charlottesville; WVAW-LD's transmitter is located on Carters Mountain south of the city. Due to WVAW-LD's low-power status, its broadcast radius only covers the immediate Charlottesville area. Therefore, it relies on cable and satellite to reach the entire market. In broadcasting, sister stations or sister channels are radio or television stations operated by the same company, either by direct ownership or through a management agreement. Radio sister stations will often have different formats, and sometimes one station is on the AM band while another is on the FM band. Conversely, several types of sister-station relationships exist in television; stations in the same city will usually be affiliated with different television networks (often one with a major network and the other with a secondary network), and may occasionally shift television programs between each other when local events require one station to interrupt its network feed. Lockwood Broadcast Group is a television broadcasting company that owns stations in several markets. The company's main offices are located in Richmond, Virginia, with operational headquarters in Hampton, Virginia.
