WAGR Q Class
The WAGR Q class was a two-member class of 4-6-0 steam locomotives operated by the Public Works Department (PWD) and later Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) between 1928 and 1953. History In November 1927, the PWD's Railway Construction Branch awarded a tender to Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., Kilmarnock for two 4-6-0 locomotives. Both locomotives entered service with the PWD on 31 July 1928 named '' Wiluna'' and ''Nornalup'' after contemporary construction projects. On 5 January 1931, responsibility for the Railway Construction Branch of the PWD was transferred to the WAGR, with both included and numbered Q62 and Q63. They were withdrawn on 25 October 1949 and 9 October 1953 respectively and scrapped. Namesakes The Q class designation was previously used for the Q class locomotives that were withdrawn in 1925. Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., currently operating as Brodie Engineering, is a builder of steam and later fireless and diesel locomotives. The company's history dates to foundation of an engineering workshop in 1840 in Kilmarnock, Scotland. After a long period of operation the company was acquired by the Hunslet group in 1972 and renamed Hunslet-Barclay; in 2007 the company changed hands after bankruptcy becoming Brush-Barclay as part of the FKI Group. In 2011 Brush Traction and Brush-Barclay were acquired from FKI by Wabtec. The site was acquired by Brodie Engineering Ltd in July 2020. The GT46C is a model of diesel-electric locomotive designed and built by Clyde Engineering using Electro-Motive Diesel components. A number of Australian rail freight operators purchased them from 1997: Westrail as the Q class, FreightLink as the FQ class, and Freight Australia as the single-locomotive V class. , all 24 locomotives were owned by Aurizon following its purchase of certain One Rail Australia assets in July 2022. The WAGR Q class was a six-member class of 4-6-2T tank engine steam locomotives operated by the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) between 1896 and 1925. History In April 1896, the WAGR placed an order with R&W Hawthorn Leslie & Co for four 4-6-2T locomotives. Meanwhile, the builder had two very similar locomotives that had been built in 1895 for the Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, Mozambique as part of a cancelled order. A deal was done in May 1896 for the WAGR to purchase them and they entered service in August 1896. The other four entered service in 1896/97. The 1895 built locomotives had different shaped cab windows and side tanks. They were employed as shunters at Fremantle and Midland.
