WACE (AM)
WACE (730 kHz) is a currently silent AM radio radio station broadcasting a mixed Christian radio and infomercial radio format. Licensed to Chicopee, Massachusetts, United States, the station served the Springfield radio market and has been permitted to identify itself as "Chicopee-Springfield" since 1969. The station was owned by Carter Broadcasting. History On December 1, 1946, WACE first signed on the air. It was owned by the Regional Broadcasting Company on Chicopee Street in Chicopee. WACE was a daytimer, broadcasting at 1,000 watts by day. But because AM 730 is a clear channel frequency, reserved for CKAC in Montreal and XEX in Mexico City, WACE had to sign-off at sunset to prevent interference. In the 1960s the power was increased to 5,000 watts but still as a daytime-only station, though its pre-sunrise power of 8 watts enabled the station to be heard as far away as Hartford, Connecticut, due to the transmitter's location on the banks of the Connecticut River. In the broadcasting industry, a dark television station or silent radio station is one that has gone off the air for an indefinite period of time. Usually unlike dead air (broadcasting only silence), a station that is dark or silent does not even transmit a carrier signal. WCBS-FM (101.1 FM) is a radio station offering a classic hits format licensed to New York City and is owned and operated by Audacy, Inc. The station's studios are in the combined Audacy facility in the Hudson Square neighborhood in lower Manhattan, and its transmitter is located at the Empire State Building. WCBS-FM was one of the first notable oldies stations in the country, with the format dating back to July 7, 1972. XEX-AM (730 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station based in Mexico City, Mexico. It carries a sports radio format known as "W Deportes." The station is owned by Radiópolis. XEX is a Class A clear-channel station, powered at 60,000 watts and using a non-directional antenna. The transmitter is on Avenida Rio Bravo, in Los Reyes Acaquilpan, just east of Mexico City.
