W. D. Halliburton
William Dobinson Halliburton FRS (21 June 1860, in Middlesex – 21 May 1931, in Exeter) was a British physiologist, noted for being one of the founders of the science of biochemistry. William was one of four children (three sisters) born to Thomas Gill Halliburton and Mary Strachan Homan of Middlesex. He was educated at the University College School and later at the University College London, obtaining a BSc in 1879. On his MRCS in 1883 he was appointed Assistant in Physiology at the University College under Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer. His MD followed in 1884, his membership of the Royal College of Physicians a year later and his Fellowship in 1892. Halliburton succeeded Gerald Francis Yeo in the chair of Physiology at King's College London in 1889. Over the period of 34 years at King's College he was deeply involved in its administration and was dean of the Faculty of Medical Science for many years. Walter Ernest Dixon
Walter Ernest Dixon FRS OBE (2 June 1871 – 16 August 1931) was a British pharmacologist and fellow of the Royal Society. Early life He was born in Darlington, County Durham and educated at school in Darlington and at Dulwich, gaining a Science Entrance Scholarship to St. Thomas's Hospital in 1890. He later obtained degrees from both London University and Cambridge University. Career Dixon became a house physician and then a demonstrator at St. Thomas's in the Department of Physiology. He was also appointed to Lecturership in Pharmacology at Cambridge University, where he resided, going up to London to King's College, London to deliver his lectures, where he held the post of Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1911. His candidacy citation read: "''Professor of Pharmacology. Distinguished as a pharmacologist. Professor of Pharmacology, King's College, London. Highgate Cemetery is a place of burial in North London, England, designed by architect Stephen Geary. There are approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West and East sides. Highgate Cemetery is notable both for some of the people buried there as well as for its ''de facto'' status as a nature reserve. Christian Archibald Herter (September 3, 1865 – December 5, 1910) was an American physician and pathologist noted for his work on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. He was co-founder of the ''Journal of Biological Chemistry''. Life Christian Archibald Herter was born in Glenville, Connecticut. His father, also Christian Herter, was a notable and wealthy artist and interior designer, head of the Herter Brothers. He was privately educated and began his medical degree at the early age of 15. By the age of 18, he had received an MD from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He studied pathology under William H. Welch at Johns Hopkins University and traveled to Zurich to study under Auguste-Henri Forel. Herter initially practiced mainly neurological medicine in New York City. William Senhouse Kirkes
William Senhouse Kirkes (21 January 1822 near Cartmel, Lancashire – 8 December 1864) was an English physiologist noted for his reference work ''"Kirkes' Physiology"'' which first appeared in 1848. Life He was born in 1823 at Holker in North Lancashire. After education at the grammar school of Cartmel he was, at the age of thirteen, apprenticed to a partnership of surgeons in Lancaster, and went thence to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, in 1841. He was distinguished in the school examinations, and in 1846 graduated M.D. at Berlin. In 1855, he was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, and delivered the Gulstonian lectures there in 1856. Sir James Paget was then warden of the college of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and in 1848 he and Kirkes published a ''Handbook of Physiology,'' which soon became popular among students of medicine. The Biochemical Society is a learned society in the United Kingdom in the field of biochemistry, including all the cellular and molecular biosciences.
