W.Z. Ahmed
Wahiduddin Ziauddin Ahmed (1916 – 15 April 2007) was a Pakistani filmmaker, known primarily for his work in the 1940s. After the partition of India, Ahmed continued to make movies in Pakistan but was able to make only two films. Career in British India W.Z. Ahmed was born in Gujarat in 1916. He was active as a film-maker in pre-Partition India, being an established personality in the film industry in Bombay and Pune. Apart from his ''Shalimar Pictures'' in Pune, he also ran a studio in Madras. He wrote the dialogues for the 1940 movie ''Kumkum the Dancer''. Between 1942 and 1947, he produced and directed (1942), (1944), '' Prem Sangeet'', ''Prithaviraj-Samyukta'' and ''Meera Bai'' (1947). The partition of India in 1947 was the division of British India into two independent dominion states, the Dominion of India, Union of India and Dominion of Pakistan. The Union of India is today the Republic of India, and the Dominion of Pakistan is the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Filmindia
''filmindia'' is an Indian monthly magazine covering Indian cinema and published in English language. Started by Baburao Patel in 1935, ''filmindia'' was the first English film periodical to be published from Bombay. The magazine was reportedly run "single-handedly" by Patel, who wielded power through this medium to "make or destroy a film". Its most popular column was "The Editor's Mail" answered by Patel. The magazine featured film news, editorials, studio round-ups, gossip, and reviews of different language films, mainly from Hindi and regional cinema and affiliated reviews from Hollywood. His articles included siding with the lesser known cinema workers like the technicians, extras and stuntmen. Patel met the painter S. M. Pandit around 1938, and asked him to design the covers for ''filmindia''. One of Pandit's assistants, Raghubir Mulgaonkar, was also a designer in the same periodical. Nigar Award
The Nigar Awards () were presented in an annual award show to recognize outstanding achievement in Pakistani cinema, after having been revived in 2017 following a 15-year absence. The honors are awarded by Nigar Magazine founded in 1948. The Nigar Awards are Pakistan's version of the Academy Awards. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists. The first Nigar Awards ceremony was held in 1957, to honor the accomplishments of Pakistani cinema for the year 1956. In 2002, following the 46th Annual Nigar Awards, Nigar Magazine announced its discontinuation of the awards due to the collapse of the Pakistani cinema industry. Samina Ahmad (born 20 March 1950) is a Pakistani film and television actress, stage performer, producer, and director. She is one of the most popular actresses of her time and was one of the most successful actresses of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Rashid Attre
Abdul Rasheed Attray (15 February 1919 – 18 December 1967), also known as Rasheed Attre, was a Pakistani film score composer. Early life and career Rasheed Attre was born in Amritsar, Punjab, British India in 1919. His father, Khushi Mohammad, was also singer-musician in his time. Young Rasheed acquired his initial music lessons from Khan Sahib Ashfaq Husain. Sharp enough in the field of learning music, Rasheed soon mastered the musical instruments in general and tabla, in particular. In the early 1940s, Rasheed decided to consolidate his efforts towards music composition and started his music career from Mahishori pictures, Lahore, for whom he composed two songs for the film ''Pagli'' (1943). ''Waadah'' is a 1957 Pakistani musical romance film directed by W.Z. Ahmed. It is the first film that Ahmed made in the country after he migrated to Pakistan and he made two films in Pakistan. Sabiha Khanam and Santosh Kumar played the lead roles in the film. The film became a hit due to its music which was composed by Rashid Attre, especially the songs "Jab terey sehar sey guzarta hoon" and "Bar bar barseen morey nain" became widely popular at that time. ''Waadah'' was a commercially successful of 1957 and won two awards at Nigar Awards including Best actor for Kumar and best director. The film was screened at Lok Virsa Museum in 2018.
