Vungu RDC
Vungu Rural District Council is a local government arm overseeing the Gweru Rural District. It was created in terms of the Zimbabwe Rural District Councils Act; Chapter 29.13. Its capital is Gweru in Zimbabwe. Vungu Rural District Council is literally Gweru Rural District Council taking care of the rural district with Gweru Municipality taking care of the urban district. It comprises two parliamentary constituencies, Chiwundura (eight wards) and Vungu (eleven wards) while Gweru Municipality comprises Gweru Urban and Mkoba metropolitan constituencies. Chiwundura is east of the Harare-Bulawayo Highway and Vungu is on the west side of the highway. Midlands RDCs
The Midlands (also referred to as Central England) are a part of England that broadly correspond to the Kingdom of Mercia of the Early Middle Ages, bordered by Wales, Northern England and Southern England. The Midlands were important in the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. They are split into the West Midlands and East Midlands. The region's biggest city, Birmingham often considered the social, cultural, financial and commercial centre of the Midlands, is the second-largest city and metropolitan area in the United Kingdom. Gweru
Gweru is a city in central Zimbabwe. Near the geographical centre of the country. It is on the centre of Midlands Province. Originally an area known to the Ndebele as "The Steep Place" because of the Gweru River's high banks, in 1894 it became the site of a military outpost established by Leander Starr Jameson. In 1914 it attained municipal status, and in 1971 it became a city. The city has a population of 158,200 as of the 2022 census. Gweru is known for farming activities in beef cattle, crop farming, and commercial gardening of crops for the export market. It is also home to a number of colleges and universities, most prominently Midlands State University and Mkoba Teachers College. The city was nicknamed City of Progress. The kingdom or polity of Vungu was a historic state located in Mayombe (between the present-day Republic of Congo and the present-day Democratic Republic of Congo). In the sixteenth century its name was written as "Bungu" reflecting the ambiguity of b/v/bh in Kikongo. History It is not known for sure how old Vungu was or when it was founded. The first documentary mention of it comes in a letter written by Afonso I,the king of Kongo in 1535, in which he lists "JBungu" among other places over which he ruled as king. Gweru Urban (parliamentary Constituency)
Gweru Urban is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, located in Gweru, Midlands Province. Its current MP since the 2023 election is Josiah Makombe of the Citizens Coalition for Change. Gweru District
Gweru District is a district in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe. Background Gweru District gets its name from Gweru River which has the city as its source and primary drainage basin. Maintaining the theme of the midlands Gweru is very diverse. The name Gweru is a further corruption of the name Gwelo which was a distortion of the name ''Ikwelo'' given by isiNdebele speakers in the late 19th century. Ikwelo was the district because it was not a spot name but rather a name given to a place along the length of the river in question as written by Colonel Carbutt, of Southern Rhodesia as published by the then Chief Information Officer, Information Services Branch. Zibagwe RDC
Zibagwe Rural District Council is a rural local government arm in Kwekwe District created under the Rural District Councils Act: Chapter 20.13. It was formed from the amalgamation of the former Kwekwe Rural Council and the Mashambazhou District Council in 1993. An RDC is the administrative equivalent of an urban town council, but for a rural area. Background There are 60 rural district councils from Zimbabwe's eight non-metropolitan provinces. Midlands Province has eight rural district councils, including Zibagwe RDC. The district is subdivided into 33 wards, and the registered villagers in each ward elect a councillor to represent them at the district level in the Rural District Council (RDC).
