Vuk Vrhovac
Vuk Vrhovac (13 November 1903 – 26 May 1952) was a Croatian medical doctor, pioneer of diabetology and the organizer of the domestic production of insulin and liver preparations in the 1930's in Yugoslavia. He was the organiser of the first Yugoslav insulin in Zagreb in 1935, after studying at the University of Toronto in Frederick Banting's laboratory as a Rockefeller foundation scholar. He founded the diabetes counselling centre in Zagreb in 1940, the first of its kind in this part of Europe. It assembled clinical practice, research and education in the same institute, a novelty in diabetes treatment at the time. He was a prominent representative of the temperance movement in Yugoslavia along with Andrija Štampar, and was a professor at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. The School of Medicine ( or MEF) in Zagreb is a Croatian medical school affiliated with the University of Zagreb. It is the oldest and biggest of the four medical schools in Croatia (the other three being in Osijek, Rijeka and Split), having been established in 1917 and with 1,775 students enrolled as of 2008. History The School of Medicine in Zagreb was originally envisioned as one of the four founding members of the modern University of Zagreb in the Croatian Parliament's piece of legislation passed on 13 January 1874, at the time when Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia was a constituent part of Austria-Hungary. The university was officially inaugurated by Ivan Mažuranić on 19 October 1874.
