Voorburg
Voorburg () is a town and former municipality in the west part of the province of South Holland, Netherlands. Together with the town Leidschendam and the village Stompwijk, it merged into the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg in 2002. Situated adjacent to the city of The Hague, it is often regarded as one of its suburbs. Voorburg is considered to be one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands (being founded by the Romans as the town Forum Hadriani). It celebrated its 2000th year of existence in 1988. History Voorburg was probably inhabited by humans as an urban settlement since about 2700 BC, although not continuously. The Romans arrived here in 47 AD and established a place between 69 and 70 AD, soon after or during the Batavian Revolt. Leidschendam
Leidschendam () is a town and former municipality in the province of South Holland of the Netherlands. Along with Voorburg and Stompwijk, it is part of the municipality Leidschendam-Voorburg. History The town's name has been in use for centuries and refers to the lock in the Vliet (canal), Vliet, near the historic city of Leiden. The settlement on the northern side of the lock was known as 'Veur', until the formation of the municipality of Leidschendam in 1938. This recent date belies the long history of human habitation in this area, which predates the Netherlands in the Roman era, Roman occupation two thousand years ago. Important driver for the development of the area was the Vliet (canal), Vliet canal, ferrying people and goods through Holland in the Middle Ages, and even in Roman times. Forum Hadriani, in the modern town of Voorburg, was the northernmost Ancient Rome, Roman city on the European continent and the second oldest city of the Netherlands. It was located in the Roman province Germania Inferior and is mentioned on the , a Roman road map. Stompwijk
Stompwijk is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It borders Leiden to the North, Zoeterwoude to the East, Zoetermeer to the South, and Voorschoten to the West. Stompwijk arose together with Wilseveen in the 13th century, and the name can be traced back to 1285 as ''Stompwiick''. The exact origins of its name are unknown. Stompwijk was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1938, when it merged with Veur to create the new municipality of Leidschendam. In 2002 the municipality of Leidschendam merged with the municipality of Voorburg to create the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg, of which Stompwijk has been a part ever since. Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo
Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo ( Peltuinum c. AD 7 – 67) was a popular Roman general, brother-in-law of the emperor Caligula and father-in-law of Domitian. The emperor Nero, highly fearful of Corbulo's reputation, ordered him to commit suicide, which the general carried out faithfully, exclaiming "Axios", meaning "I am worthy", and fell on his own sword. Ancestry Corbulo was born somewhere on the Italian peninsula into a senatorial family. His father, who shared the same name, entered the Senate as a formal praetor under Tiberius. His mother Vistilia came from a family which held the praetorship. Cananefates
The Cananefates, or Canninefates, Caninefates, or Canenefatae, meaning 'boat masters' – or less likely, 'leek masters' – were a Germanic tribe, who lived in the Rhine delta, in western Batavia (later Betuwe), in the Roman province of ''Germania Inferior'' (now in the Dutch province of South Holland), before and during the Roman conquest. Apparently, the name had its origins in the Cananefates living on sandy soils that were considered excellent for growing Alliums such as leeks and onions. At the beginning of the Batavian rebellion under Gaius Julius Civilis in the year 69, the Batavians sent envoys to the Canninefates to urge a common policy.
