Rotulus
A ''rotulus'' (plural ''rotuli'') or ''rotula'' (pl. ''rotulae'') is often referred to as a "vertical roll," is a long and narrow strip of writing material, historically papyrus or parchment, that is wound around a wooden axle or rod. Rotuli are unwound vertically so that the writing runs parallel to the rod, unlike the other kind of roll, called a "scroll", whose writing runs perpendicular to the rod in multiple columns. Historical Use Specific legal records in Europe, from which is still derived the title of the judicial functionary denominated the "Master of the Rolls", and the Byzantine Empire. Rotuli also have been used as Liturgical manuscripts, e.g., those used for chanting the ''Exultet''. Additionally, mortuary rolls, i.e., documents memorializing the names of all the deceased members of a monastery or other institution, which were banded together and circulated so that they could mutually pray for the repose of each other's decedents. A scroll (from the Old French ''escroe'' or ''escroue''), also known as a roll, is a roll of papyrus, parchment, or paper containing writing. Structure A scroll is usually partitioned into pages, which are sometimes separate sheets of papyrus or parchment glued together at the edges. Scrolls may be marked divisions of a continuous roll of writing material. The scroll is usually unrolled so that one page is exposed at a time, for writing or reading, with the remaining pages rolled and stowed to the left and right of the visible page. Text is written in lines from the top to the bottom of the page. Depending on the language, the letters may be written left to right, right to left, or alternating in direction ( boustrophedon). In most ancient literate cultures scrolls were the earliest format for longer documents written in ink or paint on a flexible background, preceding bound books; rigid media such as clay tablets were also used but had many disadvantages in comparison. For most purposes scrolls have long been superseded by the codex book format, but they are still produced for some ceremonial or religious purposes, notably for the Jewish Torah scroll for use in synagogues. ''Volumen'' is a music video collection released by Icelandic musician Björk on 30 November 1998 as a VHS and on 31 May 1999 as a DVD. It includes all of Björk's videos until "Hunter Hunting is the human practice of seeking, pursuing, capturing, or killing wildlife or feral animals. The most common reasons for humans to hunt are to harvest food (i.e. meat) and useful animal products (fur/ hide, bone/tusks, horn/antler, et ...". On 2 December 2002, it was reissued as ''Greatest Hits - Volumen 1993–2003'' which includes all the videos to "Nature Is Ancient". A separate DVD released in 2002, '' Volumen Plus'', is available for those who purchased this original release and who want the additional seven videos. It has been certified Gold in the USA. The DVD, whose release coincided with the release of the comprehensive ''Greatest Hits - Volumen 1993–2003'', offers those who purchased the original ''Volumen (DVD), Volumen'' release an opportunity to own the missing seven videos included on the newer release on DVD at a lower price. It includes all the videos from "Alarm Call" to "Nature Is Ancient", the latter of which being the only video on the release for which there was no corresponding single release, as the video was created only for the promotion of the ''Family Tree (Björk album), Family Tree'' box-set.
