Vogt Lo-150
The Vogt Lo-150 is a West German high-wing, single seat glider that was designed by Alfred Vogt and produced by the Wolf Hirth Company.Said, Bob: ''1983 Sailplane Directory, Soaring Magazine'', page 91, Soaring Society of America November 1983. USPS 499-920 Design and development The Lo-150 was developed from the wing span aerobatic Vogt Lo-100 as a performance cross country sailplane. The Lo-150 is constructed from wood, including its wooden monocoque fuselage. Its span two-piece wing employs a Clark Y airfoil and incorporates flaps for glidepath control. Early examples use a take-off dolly and land on a fixed skid, while later ones use a fixed monowheel landing gear. Fifteen Lo-150s were produced. Operational history Several Lo-150s were imported into the United States. A.J. Smith won the US Nationals flying an Lo-150 in 1961. Harold Jensen flew an Lo-150 in 1962, winning the Barringer Trophy. Fuselage
The fuselage (; from the French ''fuselé'' "spindle-shaped") is an aircraft's main body section. It holds crew, passengers, or cargo. In single-engine aircraft, it will usually contain an engine as well, although in some amphibious aircraft the single engine is mounted on a pylon attached to the fuselage, which in turn is used as a floating hull. Schweizer SGS 1-23
The Schweizer SGS 1-23 is a United States Open and Standard Class, single-seat, mid-wing glider built by Schweizer Aircraft of Elmira, New York. The original "standard" 1-23 was introduced in 1948. The aircraft quickly became the most numerous competition and performance sailplane in the USA. A total of 93 of all sub-models were built by the time production was completed in 1967. Design and development Schweizer Aircraft started construction of the 1-23 prototype in May 1948. The aircraft was completed and first flew on 5 July 1948, only nine weeks after construction had begun. The prototype had been ordered by Bill Frutchy of Elmira, New York and the aircraft was available for him to fly it in the second half of the US Nationals. Barringer Trophy
The Lewin B. Barringer Memorial Trophy was established by the will of Lewin Barringer in 1948. The original rules specified that the trophy would be awarded for the longest distance soaring flight from any type of launching method other than airplane tow. The trophy would become the permanent property of any pilot who won it three times in succession. History Paul Bikle was the first pilot to win the Trophy three times in succession. He subsequently donated the trophy back to the Soaring Society of America as a perpetual trophy. In 1957 the SSA Directors, with Bikle's approval, changed the rules to allow for any type of launch method and include any flights, other than those flown at the US National Contest. Harold Jensen (glider Pilot)
Harold Jensen (born c. 1965) is an American former basketball player. He is best remembered as a key player in Villanova University's surprise 1985 NCAA championship victory. He shot the winning basket in the final minutes of the 1985 showdown against Georgetown. Jensen was a 6'4" swingman from Trumbull High School in Trumbull, Connecticut. He played for coach Rollie Massimino at Villanova from 1983 to 1987. Jensen played little as a freshman, but as a sophomore was the sixth man for the Wildcats' 1985 National Championship team. For the season, Jensen averaged 4.1 points per game, but he came off the bench in the 1985 NCAA title game to shoot a perfect 5–5 from the floor and hit four clutch free throws in the closing minutes as Villanova beat the defending champion Georgetown Hoyas 66–64 in what is considered by many to be one of the biggest upsets in sports history. A flap is a high-lift device used to reduce the stalling speed of an aircraft wing at a given weight. Flaps are usually mounted on the wing trailing edges of a fixed-wing aircraft. Flaps are used to reduce the take-off distance and the landing distance. Flaps also cause an increase in drag so they are retracted when not needed. The flaps installed on most aircraft are partial-span flaps; spanwise from near the wing root to the inboard end of the ailerons. When partial-span flaps are extended they alter the spanwise lift distribution on the wing by causing the inboard half of the wing to supply an increased proportion of the lift, and the outboard half to supply a reduced proportion of the lift. Clark Y is the name of a particular airfoil profile, widely used in general purpose aircraft designs, and much studied in aerodynamics over the years. The profile was designed in 1922 by Virginius E. Monocoque ( ), also called structural skin, is a structural system in which loads are supported by an object's external skin, in a manner similar to an egg shell. The word ''monocoque'' is a French term for "single shell". First used for boats, a true monocoque carries both tensile and compressive forces within the skin and can be recognised by the absence of a load-carrying internal frame.
